Class 2A Paris Regional
Effingham Coach Jeff Schafer said his team almost shocked teams in the Paris Regional Tuesday.
"We almost shocked the regional today," said Schafer. "With six holes to play, we were actually looking like we had a real shot to advance. Paris just outplayed us the last six holes and ended up beating us by nine shots. We were right there. We ended up with our best score of the year."
Mattoon won the regional with 330 strokes followed by Paris 348, Mount Zion 356, Effingham 357, Charleston 360, Arcola 361, Lawrenceville 366, Olney 377 and Meridian 428.
Scoring for the Hearts were Max Woelfer 82, Colby Haynes 87, Ryker Schneider 90 and Nick Burgess 98. Non-counting scores were Ethan Ritz 99 and Preston Latch 109.
Woelfer advanced as one of the top four individuals while Mattoon and Paris advanced as the top two teams.
"Congrats to Max who shot his best round of the year and will be advancing to the sectional. Only four individuals advanced so that was very tough to do," said Schafer. "This group was a lot of fun to coach and we showed a lot of improvement from Day 1 to today. I'm really proud of them all. We are going to miss Max and Preston next year. They both did a great job and my other seniors were awesome to have out this year."
Woelfer will head to the Centralia Sectional Tuesday, October 13.
