Bulldogs Win Girls Triangular, St. A Boys Have Outstanding Weekend

The Bulldogs tallied 171 followed by Effingham 178 and Teutopolis 221. Effingham's Ava Boehm was medalist with a 39.
Scoring for St. Anthony were Ellie Wegman 40, Macy Ludwig 42, Reagan Westendorf 44 and Nina Hakman 45. Non-counting scores were Lauren Schwing 46, Morgan Schuette 48, Jessica Coffin 50, Cara Hakman 53 and Maddy Brummer 58.
Scoring for the Hearts were Boehm, Kennedy Collier 42, Morgan Krouse 46 and Jaelyn Boone 51. Non-counters were Anna Sigg 52, Madi Stortzum 60 and Anna Hirtzel 62.
Scoring for Teutopolis were Averie Bushue 48, Maggie Koester 57, Abaigail Wortman 58 and Mollie Koester 58. Non-counter was Alaina Helmink 64.
At Centralia
Effingham St. Anthony claimed the championship of the Centralia Better Ball Invitational Saturday at the Greenview Golf Course.
The Bulldogs tallied 220 followed by O'Fallon 222, Mascoutah 230, Highland 233, Nashville 236, Belleville East 238, Marion 239, Salem 249, Alton 250, Centralia 254, Herrin 357, Carbondale 358, Belleville West 267 and Collinsville 277.
"We were able to defend our title today," said St. Anthony Coach Phil Zaccari. "This is a wonderful event where we are able to build camaraderie and teamwork as well as play another 18 hole event for a second day in a row which will help prepare us for post-season. The team played very well and were able to defeat the larger shcools in the field."
Luke Flaig and Thomas Chojnicki tallied a 37-34 -- 71 for the Bulldogs for third place while Jayden Rios and Jonathan Willenborg scored 33-39 -- 72 for sixth place. Ryan Schultz and Michael Martelli had a 38-39 -- 77.
"Luke and Thomas played steady all day," said Zaccari. "They were able to feed off of each other to place third. Jayden and Jonathan struggled a little at the beginning of their round but then really got it going birdieing four out of the last six to tie for fourth overall. Ryan and Michael also played steady to complete our scoring. It was a great weekend and confidence builder for us."
Claiming the top spot were Logan Lowery and Caden Cannon of O'Fallon with a 67.
The Bulldogs and Effingham competed in the Stan Adkins Invitational Friday at the Charleston Country Club.
Charleston won its own invitational with a 322 team total followed by St. Anthony 329, Rantoul 330, Champaign Central 331, Mattoon 333, Sullivan 343, Paris 345, Olney 348, Lawrenceville 353, Effingham 358, Mount Zion 358, Champaign Centennial 367, Danville 379, Urbana 385 and Bloomington 395.
Rantoul's Trey VanWinkle claimed medalist honors with a 76. St. Anthony's Chojnicki finished fourth with a 78 while Michael Martelli was ninth with a 79. Other counting scores were Ryan Schultz 85 and Jonathan Willenborg 87. Non-counting scores were Jayden Rios 91 and Luke Flaig 91.
"The team battled windy conditions on an unfamiliar course," said Zaccari. "Our underclassmen really stepped up and played well. Thomas is a sophomore and Michael is a freshman."
The Hearts had a team total of 358. Scoring were Aiden Beck 81, Tate Niebrugge 83, Nick Burgess 96 and Ryker Schneider 99. Non-counter was Ethan Ritz 101.
"We did get a chance to play a couple guys that don't usually get to play," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "Those guys responded pretty well."
