(THE STATE CHAMPION ST. ANTHONY HIGH SCHOOL BOYS GOLF TEAM AFTER THEY WON THE REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP)
In his 20th year as St. Anthony High School boys golf coach, Phil Zaccari gets to celebrate another state championship.
The Bulldogs boys won the title Saturday, after Friday's round was washed out. St. Anthony finished with a 318 team total, six shots better than runner-up Port Byron (Riverdale).
Senior Luke Ludwig led the way for the Bulldogs, firing a four-over 76, 40 out and 36 on the back nine. Senior Ben Strullmyer stepped with a 79 (40-39). senior Nathan Schultz shot an 80 (42-38), and junior Jayden Rios shot an 83 (43-40). Also for the Bulldogs: senior Zach Wortman shot an 84 (41-43) and junior Luke Flaig shot a 97 (45-52). Ludwig's Saturday round tied for third best, while Strullmyer's Saturday round tied for 10th best.
It's the fourth state championship for the Bulldogs boys, all with Zaccari at the helm, to go with two second place finishes and a third.
A Welcome Home celebration is planned on Sunday, with the team climbing aboard a fire engine at the Effingham Event Center at 12:30pm for a trip through town to the Enlow Center, where a ceremony will begin at approximately 1pm.
Here's the route for the victory parade:
That route is east on Fayette to Henrietta Street, north on Henrietta to Jefferson Avenue, east on Jefferson to 4th Street, north on 4th to St. Louis Avenue, east on St. Louis past St. Anthony Church to 3rd Street, north on 3rd to Roadway Avenue, and east on Roadway to the Enlow Center.
In addition to the Bulldogs' state championship win, three girls from the city competed at the state tournament in Decatur.
