EHS Girls Claim Apollo Conference Title, St. A Boys Win Championship

TAYLORVILLE -- Effingham High School captured the championship of the Apollo Conference Girls Tournament at Oak Terrace Golf Course Monday.
The Hearts tallied 343 strokes followed by Charleston 372, Mattoon 380, Mahomet-Seymour 452 and Mount Zion 484. Lincoln and Taylorville did not have enough players for team scores.
Mattoon's Kira Wolf was medalist with a 76. Five EHS players finished in the top eight to earn All-Apollo Conference honors.
Coach Jerry Trigg's crew claimed second and fourth places as Kennedy Collier had an 84 and teammate Keira Hirtzel an 84 to tie for second and Abbi Burgess an 86 to place fourth. Ava Boehm took sixth with an 89 to finish out the scoring. Morgan Krouse also reached Apollo Conference status by placing eighth with a 92.

At Effingham
Effingham High School hosted the Apollo Conference Boys Golf Tournament at the Effingham Country Club Monday.
Charleston won the team championship with a 299 followed by Mattoon 331, Lincoln 335, Effingham 372, Mahomet-Seymour 375, Taylorville 380 and Mount Zion 383.
Medalist was Charleston's Ben Lanman with a 70. The Trojans took second as Preston Smith tallied a 74, a fourth as Blake Wolf had a 77, fifth as Keegan Gowein had a 78 and sixth as Robert Rardin had a 79.
Other golfers who made All-Apollo were Mattoon's Tanner Romine who finished third with a 77 and Colton Romine who took seventh with an 80 and Lincoln's Drew Singleton who finished eighth with an 82.
Leading the Hearts were Tate Niebrugge with a 43-43 -- 86, Aiden Beck with a 47-45 -- 92, Ben Donsbach with a 48-48 -- 96 and Austin Waldhoff with a 49-49 -- 98.

At Champaign
Effingham St. Anthony captured the championship of the Sam Wells Memorial Invitational at Lake of the Woods Golf Course Monday.
The Bulldogs tallied 308 followed by Prairie Central 311, Stanford Olympia 351, Schlarman 353 and Monticello 355. Champaign St. Thomas More did not have enough for a team score.
"It was a solid victory for us today," said St. Anthony Coach Phil Zaccari. "The course was recovering from some summer stress and the greens were very inconsistent. Our guys adjusted to the conditions and played pretty well.
"Luke Ludwig hit the ball real well and made enough putts down the stretch to claim medalist honors with a 73. Nathan Schultz also played solid tee to green firing a 75. He is getting back to early season form. This victory will help build our confidence as we head to the post season."
Ludwig had a 36-37 -- 73 followed by Nathan Schultz 36-39 -- 75, Ben Strullmyer 36-42 -- 78 and Luke Flaig 41-41 -- 82. Schultz took third while Strullmyer tied for sixth.
Non-scorers were Zach Wortman 42-42 -- 84, Ryan Schultz 45-40 -- 85, Thomas Chojnicki 41-52 -- 93 and Hayden Rios 46-48 -- 94.
At Cardinal Golf Course
Teutopolis played host to Sullivan at Cardinal Golf Course and fell to the visitors, 160-178.
C. Ellis, L. Bachen, L. Ellis and T. Lawyer had a 40 each for Sullivan.
T-town was led by Carter Jansen 42, Jacob Herd 44, Asa Hanson 46 and Andy Niebrugge 46. Non-counters were Derek Ozenkoski 47, Drew Kerner 48, Zach Ruholl 50 and Gavin Meyer 57.
At Fox Prairie G.C.
Altamont captured a dual meet victory over Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg at Fox Prairie Golf Course Monday, 185-233.
Medalist was Altamont's Grant Schmidt with a 40 followed by Kevin Hall 44, Tyler Stonecipher 45 and Addie Smith 56.
Scoring for WSS were Logan Stremming 47, Matt Wojcik 57, Kiefer Reel 63 and Eli Sattler 66. Non-counter was Dean Kaufman 70.
In girls, Altamont's Isabella Hosick had a 55 while Megan Williams had a 63. WSS' Kim Hennon had a 57.
