Bulldogs Win Golf Invite, St. A Girls Claim Quad; EHS Boys 10th

St. Anthony boys golf team won the championship of the Centralia Orphan Better Ball Invitational.

CENTRALIA -- The Effingham St. Anthony High School boys golf team placed first at the very rainy/wet Centralia Better Ball Invitational Saturday.                                                        

"It started raining just before we were set to tee off and it did not stop for 16 holes," said St. Anthony Coach Phil Zaccari. "I was very proud of the way our team embraced the weather and played through it to win.  All of our pairs' were able to place in the top six individually.  This is a really good win for us as we start to prepare for the post-season."

The Bulldogs tallied 218 strokes followed by Herrin 220, O'Fallon 231, Belleville East 234, Nashville 235, Granite City 240, Centralia 244, Highland 244, Marion 247, Mascoutah 248, Salem 251, Collinsville 252, Alton 252, Carbondale 255, Belleville West 267 and Mount Vernon 283.

Herrin's Logan Craft and Corbin Preston were the low individual team with a 70.

St. Anthony's Jayden Rios and Luke Flaig took third with a 72 while Luke Ludwig and Zach Wortman were fourth with a 72. Nathan Schultz and Ben Strullmyer finished sixth with a 74.

 

At Effingham

Effingham St. Anthony tallied a 162 to claim a girls quadrangular golf meet at Cardinal Golf Course Friday.

The Bulldogs scored a 162 followed by Effingham 171, Charleston 188 and Teutopolis 189.

St. Anthony's Claire McHugh was medalist with a 39. Also scoring were Macy Ludwig 40, Morgan Schuette 40 and Ava Wegman 43. Non-counting scores were Jessica Coffin 43 and Regan Westendorf 48.

Scoring for Effingham were Ava Boehm 40, Kennedy Collier 42, Kiera Hirtzel 44 and Abbi Burgess 45. Non-counters were Morgan Krouse and Anna Sigg with a 48 each.

Scoring for Charleston were Paige Chappell 46, Hannah Harpster 47, SheKinah Moore 47 and Taryn Pearson 48. Non-counting scores were Rileigh Babbs 53 and Stacey Zerbst 54.

Scoring for Teutopolis were Averie Bushue 42, Maddie Hoene 47, Mattie Thoele 48 and Allie Niebrugge 52. Non-counters were Maggie Koester 54 and Macy Vogt 59.

Exhibition players were Regan Koester (St. Anthony) 43, Ellie Wegman (St. Anthony) 47, Addie Smith (Altamont) 49, Makayla Allie (Effingham) 54, Jaelyn Boone (Effingham) 59 and Shelby Stone (Effingham) 64.

 

At Charleston

Effingham tied for 10th place in the 10th Annual Stan Adkins Trojan Fall Golf Classic during the weekend.

Charleston varsity won the meet with 307 followed by Sullivan 327, Lawrenceville 330, Rantoul-Paxton-Buckley-Loda 338, Mattoon 339, Champaign Central 341, Charleston JV 348, Paris 351, Champaign Centennial 356, Effingham 389,  Mount Zion 385, Olney 385, Monticello 392, Bloomimgton 434, Danville 487 and Urbana University HIgh 0.

Scoring for the Hearts were Aiden Beck 90, Tate Niebrugge 98, Austin Waldhoff 99, Colby Heaton 102 and Ryker Schneider 103.
