BLOOMINGTON -- Effngham St. Anthony High School finished fifth at the Challenge at the Den Golf Tournament hosted by Normal West High School at the Den Golf Course Thursday.
"This is a match play event where the teams play four singles matches and four better ball matches," said St. Anthony Coach Phil Zaccari.
The Bullogs' singles players were Luke Ludwig and Luke Flaig. Ludwig halved his first match and won his second to get the team 1.5 points. Flaig halved his first match and then lost one down in a hard-fought second match. He scored 1/2 point.
The better ball team of Nathan Schultz and Zach Wortman halved their first match and then lost their second match one down competing hard the entire way.
The better ball team of Ben Strullmyer and Jayden Rios were able to win both of their matches to score two points. Overall the Bulldogs had 4 1/2 points for the fifth place finish.
"This is a really cool event," said Zaccari. "We are the only Class A school there and once again, we held our own. Luke Ludwig was two down with three to play in his first match and battled back making an eight foot birdie putt on his last hole to gain the tie. Overall we played very well today. One putt here or there and we could have won the event, it was that close."
