First Day of 2017 State Golf Tournament in the Books

Local golfers are doing well after the first day of state tournament action.

St. Anthony's girls are in third place after the first day with a total of +54. Of the four counters, freshman Macy Ludwig led the way with an 82 on the par-72 course and is tied for 25th. Junior Ava Wegman and junior Clare McHugh each shot an 84 and are tied for 32nd, and freshman Morgan Schuette shot a 92 and tied for 61st for the four counting scores. Junior Regan Westendorf shot a 95 and sophomore Jessica Coffin, on her 16th birthday, shot a 96.

Two Effingham High School girls are playing as individuals. Junior Abbi Burgess shot a 79, seven shots over par and is tied for 8th in individual play. Freshman Ava Boehm shot an 87 and is tied for 42nd.

The St. Anthony boys' team is in seventh place after the first day with a +55 total. Junior Luke Ludwig led the way with an eight-over 80 and is tied for 22nd. Of the other counters, junior Ben Strullmyer shot an 84 and is tied for 39th, sophomore Jayden Rios shot an 89 and tied for 74th, and junior Nathan Schultz shot a 90 and is tied for 76th. Also for St. Anthony, junior Zach Wortman shot a 93 and is tied for 84th and junior Dylan Ferguson shot a 96 and is tied for 94th.

The girls state tournament is at Red Tail Run Golf Course in Decatur. The boys state tournament is at Prairie Vista Golf Course in Bloomington.
