St. Anthony, Sacred Heart Junior High Golfers Headed to State

Five girls and two boys from Effingham St. Anthony Junior High School and two girls from Effingham Sacred Heart qualified for the State Golf Tournament after competing in sectionals.

The girls played at the Greenview Illinois Sectional Tuesday. The five advancing are Ellie Wegman, Abby Dietzen, Madeline Brown, Annie Strullmyer and Lauren Schwing from St. Anthony and the two from Sacred Heart are Nina Hakman and Ada Rozene.

Wegman finished fifth with a 51-47 -- 98 followed by Brown 18th with 63-59 -- 122, Strullmyer and Schwing tied for 19th. Strullmyer had 57-66 -- 123 and Schwing 69-54 -- 123. Dietzen finished 21st with 73-53 -- 126.

Nina Hakman and Ada Rozene of Sacred Heart are headed to State

Hakman took 13th with a score of 60-51 -- 111 and Rozene was 14th with 61-52 -- 113.

In the boys Sectional at Eagle Ridge Golf Course in Paris, two players from St. Anthony advanced to State. Those included Thomas Chojnicki with a fifth place finish at 40-45 -- 85 and Jonathan Willenborg with a 10th place finish at 49-39 -- 88.

Also competing but not advancing were St. Anthony's Michael Martelli 14th with 52-47 -- 99, Teddy Dietzen 15th with 56-47 -- 103, Charlie Wegman 17th with 50-53 -- 103 and Lane Ludwig 20th with 56-57 -- 113.

Sacred Heart also had a boy competing but he did not advance. Joel Buenker had a 71-61 -- 132 score.

The State Tournaments are scheduled for Peoria Saturday, September 16.
