Bulldogs Third, Hearts 10th at John Macek Boys Golf Invite; St. A Girls Claim Tuscola Invite Title

CHAMPAIGN -- Effingham St. Anthony finished third while Effingham took 10th in Champaign Centennial's John Macek Boys Golf Invitational Monday at the University of Illinois Orange Course.

Central Maroon claimed the team championship with 318 followed by Mattoon 322, St. Anthony 330, Bloomington 331, Central White 336, Charleston 350, Bismarck-Henning 351, Danville 354, Monticello 356, Effingham 358,  Centennial White 366, Urbana 372, Centennial Blue 390, Champaign St. Thomas More 393 and Taylorville 395.

University's Varun Chopra was medalist with a 70. The next closest was St.  Anthony's Niko Dust, Central Maroon's Conor Butts and Mattoon's Nicholas Nguyen with a 76 each.

Dust had a 39-37 -- 76 for the Bulldogs. Also scoring were Luke Ludwig 38-43 -- 81, Trey Koester 43-40 -- 83 and Nathan Schultz 45-45 -- 90. Non-counting scores were Jacob Schimdt 52-39 -- 91 and Zach Wortman 48-49 -- 97.

Scoring for the Hearts were Callaway Smith 39-44 -- 83, Matt Linders 46-45 -- 91, Ryan Sandifer 49-42 -- 91 and Jacob Sigg 50-43 -- 93. Non-counting scores were Tate Niebrugge 49-53 -- 102 and Nate Linders 62-52 -- 114.

"Today we struggled with the course," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "The greens and fairways were very hard and fast. Today was probably one of the hardest putting days I have ever witnessed. The bottom line was that today we gave away way too many easy shots to compete."


At Salem

Teutopolis edged Salem in a boys golf match at the Salem Country Club Monday, 173-176.

Scoring for the  Shoes were Christian Deters, who tied for medalist honors, with a 41,  Braydon Bushue 42,  Keegan Meyer 43 and Dylan Buenker 47.


At Tuscola

Effingham St. Anthony captured the championship of the Tuscola Invitational Monday.

The tournament was set up Ryder Cup style with 1-6 regular play, 7-12 alternate shot and 13-18 best ball.

Partners were Abbie Schmidt and Ava Wegman with an 87, Clare McHugh and Regan Koester with an 89 and Abby Repking and Jessica Coffin with a 106.

Leroy finished second with a 202 and Tuscola took third with a 232.


At Charleston

Effingham High School finished fifth at the 9th Annual Lady Trojan Golf Scramble Monday.

Charleston captured first place with a 70 followed by Mattoon 84, Central 84, Salem 87, Effingham 88, Teutopolis 96, Sullivan 98, Mount Zion 113 and Decatur Eisenhower 121. Centennial had 41 with one team scoring and Paris had 55 with one team scoring.

L. Chappell/A. O'Dell of Charleston finished first with a total of 30.

Effingham's 1/2 finished with a 43 while 3/4 tallied a 45 and 5/6 had a 49.
