Effingham holds the trophy from placing first at the St. Anthony Golf Invitational.

Effingham High School edged Effingham St. Anthony to claim the championship of the St. Anthony Boys Golf Invitational Wednesday at Fox Prairie Golf Course.

The Hearts tallied 330 followed by St. Anthony No. 1 333,  Teutopolis 341, Sullivan 366, St. Anthony No. 2 372, Champaign St. Thomas More 389, Flora 392, Tuscola 399, Decatur St. Teresa 426 and Altamont 437.

Effingham's Calloway Smith was medalist with a 71 followed in the top 10 by Caden Ellis (Sullivan) 73, Seth Icenogle (Tuscola) 75,  Mitch Cremer (LSA) 76, Luke Ludwig (St. Anthony No. 1 77), Dayton Pate (LSA) 78, Niko Dust (St. Anthony No. 1) 79, Dylan Ferguson (St. Anthony No. 2) 79, Lucas Tay (St. Thomas More) 80 and Matt Linders (EHS) 81.

"Well, I will have to say this was a very pleasant surprise and I mean that in a good way," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "When you have a special player like Callaway that can go low, it gives you a chance to win. Callaway played just a solid round of golf, he didn't really make any putts. It was just a great ball striking round of golf. He finished second last year and was excited to take home first and more importantly lead our team to the title.

"Matt Linders also had a good start to his senior year with an 81 that included an eagle and a birdie. Ryan and Jacob did what they needed to do to help us win today. We got Tate, Tommy and Nate some valuable experience today. I am really happy for our kids as they did a great job."

Scoring for the Hearts were Callaway Smith 36-35 -- 71, Matt Linders 37-44 -- 81, Ryan Sandifer 42-46 -- 88 and Jacob Sigg 43-47 -- 90.

Scoring for St. Anthony No. 1 were Luke Ludwig 39-38 -- 77, Niko Dust 42-37 -- 79, Trey Koester 45-42 -- 87 and Zach Wortman 46-44 -- 90.

Teutopolis took third as Christian Deters tallied 44-37 -- 81, Dylan Buenker 40-45 -- 85, Keegan Meyer 44-42 -- 86 and Braydon Bushue 47-42 -- 89.
