Tiger Woods Registers For U.S. Open

Tiger Woods has registered for the U.S. Open, which is to be played at Oakmont Country Club in June.

But that doesn't necessarily mean he will tee it up at the Pennsylvania course where he tied for second in 2007.

Woods was required to register by Wednesday's deadline if he wants to play. According to the United States Golf Association, he registered at 4:33 p.m. on April 4 -- three weeks ago.

All 51 players who are fully exempt for the 116th U.S. Open have registered, including defending champion Jordan Spieth.

Woods, 40, who has won the U.S. Open three times, has yet to disclose when he will return to competitive golf after undergoing two back procedures in 2015, the last occurring on Oct. 28.

Since then, his public comments have been sparse, and his agent, Mark Steinberg, has repeatedly said that there is no timetable for his return.

"Simply procedural," Steinberg said. "No reason to read anything into this."

Woods also registered for the 2014 U.S. Open despite having undergone back surgery. He later opted not to play.

Oakmont is generally considered one of the toughest courses in the United States. In 2007, Argentina's Angel Cabrera edged Woods and Jim Furyk by a stroke, shooting a final-round 69 to finish at 285, 5 over par.

Woods attended a junior clinic in South Carolina last week, where he hit shots over a period of 45 minutes, fueling speculation that his return was imminent, possibly at the Wells Fargo Championship next week or the Players Championship beginning May 12.
