Christian Deters Advances To State Golf Meet

One lone area golf competitor advanced to the State Golf Finals this weekend and that lone golfer was Teutopolis High School's Christian Deters.
Deters competed at the Class 2A Anna-Jonesboro Sectional Monday and finished with an 81. That tied Deters with three other players and in the top 10. The top three teams and top 10 individuals not members of teams advance to the State Finals scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State University in Normal.
Also competing in the Anna-Jonesboro Sectional but not advancing were the Effingham St. Anthony team, the Teutopolis team and Altamont's Adam Mayhaus and Dylan Miller.
The Bulldogs narrowly missed their 10th straight IHSA State Finals appearance by just one stroke, finishing in fourth place with a 337.
Breese Mater Dei won the sectional with a 328 followed by McLeansboro Hamilton County 331, Nashville 336, St. Anthony 337, Teutopolis 338, Litchfield 344, Woodlawn 350, Chester 351, Robinson 352, Carmi-White County 354, Sparta 378 and Trenton Wesclin 380.
Mater Dei, McLeansboro and Nashville advance as teams. Robinson's Tom Goodman, a senior, was medalist with a 72.
Scoring for St. Anthony were Jared Hutchison 83, Niko Dust 83, Jeff Niebrugge 83 and Luke Ludwig 88. Jacob Schmidt had a 94 and Mitchell Sager a 97 for the Bulldogs.
Three other members of the Teutopolis team did not make state. Brayden Bushue shot an 82, one stroke off the advancing 81s. Mat Weber tallied an 87 and Dylan Buenker an 88.
Altamont's two golfers, Adam Mayhaus shot an 82 and Dylan Miller a 99.
At El Paso
Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg's Tristan Warner competed in the Class 1A El Paso-Gridley Sectional but failed to advance.
Bloomington Central Catholic won the meet with a 334 followed by El Paso-Gridley 335, Bismarck-Henning 352, Champaign St. Thomas More 353, Watseka 366, Arcola 369, Sullivan 370, Dwight 373, Beecher 386, Bethany Okaw Valley 390, Westville 394 and Milford 427.
Urbana University's Varun Chopra, a junior, was medalist with a 70.
At Carterville
The Effingham girls team, along with St. Anthony's Ava Wegman and Abbie Schmidt and T-town's Madison Magee competed in the Class A Carterville Sectional at Crab Orchard Golf Club Monday with no one local advancing to state.
Metropolis Massac County won the sectional with a 336 followed by Belleville Althoff Catholic 348, Mount Carmel 351, Nashville 364, Pinckneyville 365, Waterloo 370, Salem 375, Alton Marquette 377, Effingham 381, Herrin 388, Carterville 399 and Breese Central 412.
Metropolis Massac County, Bellville Althoff Catholic and Mount Carmel advance as teams. Mount Carmel's Abbey Leighty, a senior, was medalist with a 75.
Scoring for Effingham were Alex Brummer 90, Kaylee Tonn 92, Keira Hirtzel 98 and Hope Collier 101. Non-counters were Madison Weis 107 and Abbi Burgess 119.
St. Anthony's Ava Wegman shot a 90 while Abbie Schmidt scored a 104. T-town's Madison Magee shot a 111.
