Effingham's Callaway Smith Ties For Second at Mattoon Golf Invite

MATTOON -- With a field of 38 teams, the Mattoon Golf Invitational was contested at Meadowview Golf Course over two days during the weekend.
Effingham High School's Callaway Smith tied with two other players for second place in the tournament. Winning was Justin Hemings of Edwardsville with a five-under-par 139. Smith, Pete Kuhl (Morton) and Varun Chopra (Urbana Uni-High) ended with a 141 each. David Perkins finished out the top five from East Peoria with a 142.
Morton captured the team championship with a 586 followed by Barrington 589, Edwardsville 598, Marmion Academy 615, Normal West 617, Normal Community 622, Normal U-High 637, Quincy 640, Mount Carmel 642, Centralia 643, Massac County 645, Effingham 652, Mahomet-Seymour 652, Mattoon 655, Monticello 668, Springfield Sacred Heart Griffin 672, Springfield 673, Champaign Central 676, Champaign St. Thomas More 677, Charleston 677, Bloomimgton 681, Rantoul PBL 683, Mount Zion 685, Effingham St. Anthony 868, East Peoria 686, Danville 688, Lawrenceville 699, Herrin 707, Glenwood 708, Teutopolis 711, Lincoln 736, Taylorville 755, Paris 779, Mattoon B 816, Decatur St. Teresa 834 and Judah Christian 4,408.
"The boys fought through some tough conditions and then, when it cleared, played great," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "Callaway had an incredible round of golf. Ryan played really good. Reed hung in there with an 82 the first day and Michael had his best 18 hole score. We were two shots from everybody under 90 which is good golf."
Scoring for the Hearts along with Smith with a 69-72 -- 141, were Ryan Sandifer 80-84 -- 164, Reed Schafer 82-88 -- 170, Matt Linders 89-91 -- 180, Michael Woltman 86-105 -- 191 and Jacob Sigg 91-104 -- 195.
Scoring for St. Anthony were Jared Hutchison 71-81 -- 152, Niko Dust 84-87 -- 171, Niebrugge/Koester 87-97 -- 184, Luke Ludwig 88-97 -- 185, Mitchell Sager 96-91 -- 187 and Jacob Schmidt 92-102 -- 194.
Scoring for Teutopolis were Christian Deters 82-80 -- 162, Dylan Buenker 93-84 -- 177, Mat Weber 89-90 -- 179, Keegan Meyer 98-95 -- 193, Braydon Bushue 100-97 -- 197 and Will Schlink 107-112 -- 219.
