The Effingham High School boys golf team got to compete in a Ryder Cup format tournament in Decatur Friday.

The event, hosted by Mt. Zion, was played on the Red Tail Run course.  Mt. Zion won the event with a 223 total, one stroke better than Centennial and two shots ahead of Mattoon.  Olney had a 228 total, Effingham finished at 231 and Charleston had a 234 team total.

Effingham's Jackson Wendling and Sean Sandifer were third in the four-ball competition with a 75, Jake Linders and Anthony Barrett were fifth in the scramble with a 73, and Anthony Lechman and Reed Schafer were fifth in the alternate shot competition with an 83.

Hearts' Coach Jeff Schafer said, "This is a fun event, where kids get to play a different format.  We didn't play great today.  Each group shot two to three shots higher than our goals.  There are about 10 teams at these tournaments, and we are taking turns beating each other.  Today, it was Mt. Zion; hopefully Saturday at Paris, it will be us."
