The Effingham St. Anthony High School boys' golf team remained undefeated in matches as it downed Champaign St. Thomas More 150-170 on Senior Night at the Effingham Country Club Tuesday.

Seniors, Joe Powell and Jack Niebrugge carded impressive one-under-par 35’s in their final home match. Senior Cole Buehnerkemper contributed a 40 as well with sophomore Garrett Hixenbaugh, also shooting a 40 to round out the scoring.

“This was our only home match this season as we have been very busy competing in
many invitationals,” said Coach Phil Zaccari. “Anytime you can go under par at the country
club, that’s pretty impressive and both Joe and Jack accomplished that tonight in leading us to
victory.

“We have six seniors this year. Joe Powell has been solid for us the last couple years. It
was great to see him get under par tonight. Jack Niebrugge has improved tremendously since
his freshman year and is a great example of what commitment and hard-work can accomplish. Dalton Anderson has also been there for us the past couple years and has shown more consistency this season than in the past.

"Cole Buehnerkemper also has improved tremendously over his career. He is a quiet competitor that never gives up. Nick Behl also has been with us for the past four seasons. He was our Most Improved Golfer last year but just was never able to break into our top six. But he has been a team player supporting everyone along the way. Cody Pike joined us this season more for the love of the game. He has become a student of the game. We wish he would have played all four years. He has been a wonderful team addition.

"The quiet goal this year has been for us to make some noise at the State Finals and all of our seniors have played roles to make it happen. They have worked hard to continue the winning golf tradition at St. Anthony and will be greatly missed next year,” concluded Zaccari.
