McIlroy Captures First Open Championship

(Hoylake, England) -- Rory McIlroy is celebrating his first Open Championship victory after holding off the field at Royal Liverpool. The 25-year-old from Northern Ireland captured his third major and is now just a victory at The Masters away from completing the career grand slam. McIlroy completed the tournament at 17-under-par, becoming just the seventh wire-to-wire winner in Open Championship history. He joins Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods as the only players to have won three different majors by the time they were 25.

Spaniard Sergio Garcia made a push in Sunday's final round, but finished two shots off the pace at 15-under. Garcia's round of 66 put him in a second-place tie with American Rickie Fowler. Jim Furyk also went low on Sunday, shooting a 65 to stand alone in fourth place at 13-under-par.

World-number-one Adam Scott finished at 12-under-par, in a tie for fifth with Marc Leishman. Phil Mickelson was tied for 23rd at five-under, while Woods struggled to a round of 75 on Sunday. He finished at six-over-par for the tournament and in 69th place, his worst finish at a major.
