Olney Hands Newton 56-35 Loss In Football

OLNEY -- Olney played host to Newton in high school football Friday and sent the Eagles home with a 56-35 loss.

The Tigers had the first touchdown as Gavyn Cothern went in from the 22-yard line. The extra point was good.

Newton came back to within 7-6 when Hayden Mulvey handed off to Drake Wolf for the eight yard run into the end zone. The point after run failed.

Olney then scored again when Gavyn Cothern connected with Ian PIanfetti for a 21 yard pass completion and the touchdown. The extra point was good and the Tigers had a 14-6 lead as the first quarter ended.

The Eagles came right back in the second period when Mulvey handed off to Wolf who went in from the four-yard line. Owen Schackmann carried the ball into the end zone for the two point conversion and Newton had pulled within 14-13 but Olney moved ahead to hold a 28-21 halftime lead.

The Tigers scored twice in the third and two more times in the fourth quarters.

Newton had a touchdown each in the third and fourth quarters. Mulvey handed the ball off to Quincy Fulton and Fulton went in from the two-yard line in the third quarter. Henry Will's extra point was good.

The Eagles scored the final touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter. Mulvey dropped back to the 19 and threw to Fulton for a 19-yard pass completion and touchdown. Will connected on the extra point.

Newton had 22 first downs compared to 17 for the Tigers. The Eagles finished with 228 yards passing compared to 183 for the Tigers. Olney ended with 434 total yards offensively while Newton had 391.
