Shelbyville Hands Newton Football Loss

SHELBYVILLE -- Newton High School fell in the season opening football contest to Shelbyville by a 42-28 count Friday evening.

The Rams opened with a 14-7 first quarter lead and led 42-14 at halftime. Newton tallied two more touchdowns in the second half.

Newton had 12 first downs to 11 for the Rams. The Eagles finished with 95 rushing yards and six of 19 passes for 180 yards. They had 275 yards total offense to 165 for the Rams.

The opening touchdown for Newton came in the first quarter as Hayden Mulvey handed off to David Ferguson who ran the ball from the 10 into the end zone. Henry Will connected on the point after from the three.

Shelbyville then scored the next four touchdowns before Newton scored again in the second quarter. Mulvey dropped back to the 37 and threw a pass completion. Drake Wolf ran the ball from the 45 and carried it into the end zone for a touchdown. Will attempted the point after and the point was good.

Newton scored the last two touchdowns of the game. Mulvey handed off the ball at the eight and and Wolf ran in for the score. Will again got the extra point.

The final score for Newton came as Mulvey dropped back to the 49 in the fourth quarter and threw a pass completion. Evan Zumbahlen ran the ball in from the 15. There were a total of 48 yards gained. Will again got the extra point.

Mulvey finished with 175 yards. Wolf carried the ball 82 yards and Ferguson had 21 yards.
