Newton Wins Final Regular Season Football Game

NEWTON -- Newton High School finished regular season play with a 40-28 high school football victory over Marshall Friday.

The Eagles moved ahead 14-0 in the first quarter. The first touchdown came as Max Meinhart handed off the ball at the 10-yard-line to Meyer Tarr who scored. Hayden Mulvey kicked the extra point.

Newton then came back with a second touchdown in the opening quarter. Meinhart dropped back and threw a pass completion. Evan Zumbahlen then ran the ball from the 49 and went 89 yards for the touchdown. Mulvey kicked the extra point and the Eagles led 14-0.

Marshall came back with a touchdown in the second quarter but the Eagles scored again. Meinhart handed the ball off at the eight yard line and Tarr went into the end zone. The extra point by Mulvey was good and Newton held a 21-7 lead.

Marshall then tallied a second touchdown in the quarter to pull within 27-14 at halftime.

The Eagles scored the lone touchdown in the third quarter. Meinhart dropped back to the 41 and threw a pass completion to Evan Zumbahlen who then ran the ball into the end zone for a 38 yard gain and a touchdown. Mulvey connected on the extra point kick and Newton was leading 28-14.

In the final quarter, Newton tallied as Meinhart handed off to Tarr who ran the ball in for the TD. The point after failed.

Marshall scored again on a four-yard touchdown.

Newton came right back to score the final touchdown. Tarr ran the ball in from the five-yard line. The point after attempt failed but Newton had pulled ahead 40-21.

Marshall scored a final touchdown before the game ended at 40-28.

Tarr had 36 carries for 264 yards and four touchdowns.

Meinhart hit five of eight passes for 150 yards and two touchdowns. Evan Zumbahlen had two receptions for 127 yards and two touchdowns.

Gus Bierman led defensively with six solo tackles and three assists. Logan Ochs had three solo tackles and five assists.
