The Mahomet-Seymour Bulldogs showed Friday night why they are atop the Apollo Conference football standings, blanking the Effingham Hearts 48-0. The game was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com

The Hearts held Mahomet-Seymour to 14 points in the first half, but the Bulldogs blew the game open in the second half, scoring 34 points. Mahomet-Seymour combined four passing plays with three running plays to account for their scoring.

Despite the score, though, it was Mahomet-Seymour's defense that stood out. The Bulldogs held the Hearts to 127 total yards on just six first downs. Effingham totaled just 113 rushing yards, and leading rusher Weldon Dunston carried for just eight yards on 16 rushes. Hearts' quarterback Gaige Gillum rushed 16 times for 82 yards. Effingham gained just 14 yards passing on five of 10 completions.

Kaden Koeberlein led the Hearts in tackles with seven, while Charlie Ring had six, Spencer Fox and Logan Kessler with four apiece, and Michael Love with three.

With the loss, Effingham slips to 3-4 on the season and 2-2 in Apollo Conference action. After a season opening loss, Mahomet-Seymour has won six straight games. The Hearts host Mt. Zion next Friday night, then wrap up the regular season at Centralia.
