Football practice for the 2023 season began Monday in Illinois, including at Effingham High School for the Flaming Hearts.
Hearts Coach Brett Hefner took time to talk with our Greg Sapp Tuesday morning about the upcoming season. They discussed changes in the schedule, who will be making up the squad this season, and the outlook for the coming season. Here's their conversation...
As Coach Hefner mentioned, the Hearts will see an old foe, the Robinson Maroons, back on their schedule. Robinson was an Apollo Conference opponent for many seasons. The Week 2 opponent will be the Mt. Carmel Golden Aces, a top team year-in and year-out and the home opening foe. Week 3 will feature a home battle with Breese Mater Dei followed by back-to-back road trips to Coles County to open conference play, at Mattoon then at Charleston.
The Hearts will play host to Taylorville in the Homecoming game on September 29, then will travel to Mahomet-Seymour before hosting Mt. Zion to wrap up conference play and playing Effingham's Senior Night game. The Hearts will travel to Centralia to wrap up the regular season.
You'll be able to hear every Hearts football game with Greg Sapp and Dustin White on your home for Hearts' football, 979XFM and www.979xfm.com.
