Hearts Fall at Mahomet-Seymour, Other High School Football 9-2

The Effingham Hearts fell to the Mahomet-Seymour Bulldogs 35-14 Friday night in the Apollo Conference football opener for both teams. The game was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com

Mahomet-Seymour built a 28-0 with three scores in the first half and another in the third quarter before the Hearts staged their first scoring drive of the season, going 77 yards in 11 plays and almost five minutes of play before Weldon Dunston scored from 12 yards out and Armando Estrada kicked the extra point to get Effingham on the board with 3:42 left in the third quarter.

Effingham scored again with 3:14 left in the game when Tanner Pontious launched a pass into the corner by the goal line. A Heart had a hand on the pass but couldn't secure it. It then deflected off a Mahomet-Seymour player and into the hands of Jacob Weaver for the score. The 13 play, 50 yard drive ended with the 11 yard touchdown pass catch and Estrada's extra point kick.

The Bulldogs' exceptional quarterback Wyatt Bohm threw for 335 yards and four touchdowns. The Bulldogs' other score was a one-yard run by Brennan Houser.

For Effingham, 38 rushing plays amassed 107 yards.and a score, to go with the passing touchdown. Effingham totaled more than six minutes more in time of possession than the Bulldogs. Each team ran 60 plays. The Hearts' Pontious went 10 of 22 passing for those 107 yards. For Effingham catching the ball: Andrew Lotz--two for 23 yards; Weldon Dunston--one for 10 yards; Garrett Wolfe--three for 36 yards; Jacob Weaver--three catches for 36 yards; Connor Thompson--one for nine yards.

Rushing the football, Effingham got 28 yards in 16 carries from Dunston including the touchdown. Pontious rushed 16 times for five net yards; Caden Walls rushed twice for eight yards; and Spencer Fox got 10 yards on four carries.

The Hearts rushed 38 times for 107 yards.

As far as the tackle sheet for the Hearts, Michael Love 5; London Rinkel 4, Blake Bushue 5, Spencer Fox 7, Logan Heil 7, Charlie Ring 5, Myles Maxedon 4, Chris Hemwall 7, Connor Simmons 2, Jack Harper 2, Josh Kelley 3, Armando Estrada 1.

The Hearts are now 0-2 on the season, but are heading home next Friday night to play host to the Charleston Trojans. Game time will be back to 7pm.

 

At Newton

Newton High School edged Casey-Westfield, 11-8 in Friday competition.

The Warriors took an 8-0 lead when Ryan Richards ran the ball in from the 29. Jake Reddicks ran the ball in for the point after.

Newton came back with a field goal by Gage Reynolds and the Eagles trailed 8-3 at halftime.

Neither team scored in the third. Newton came through in the final quarter. Max Meinhart dropped back to the 11 and thew a pass completion. Parker Wolf ran the ball from the 19 and carried it into the end zone. Wolf then carried the ball into the end zone for the 11-8 victory.
