Late NFL star Demaryius Thomas had the degenerative brain disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) when he died last December, doctors from Boston University who had been studying his brain through the Concussion Legacy Foundation said Tuesday.

It was at stage 2. Thomas was found dead in his home at age 33. No official cause of death has been given, but his family believed seizures he’d had since a 2019 car crash might have led to his death.

Family members said he’d also struggled with common conditions associated with CTE, including memory loss, paranoia and other erratic behavior. Thomas played 10 seasons before his June 2021 retirement.
