The Effingham Hearts will play the home opener for the 2021 football season Friday night. Effingham will host the Mahomet-Seymour Bulldogs in a contest that is also the Apollo Conference opener for both teams. Kickoff is at 7pm. Hear the action on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com.
The opponents had different results in last week's games.
Effingham lost their opener 42-7 at Decatur St. Teresa. The Hearts fumbled on their first two possessions and gave the Bulldogs great field position in the process. St. Teresa took full advantage and scored on those first two possessions on the way to a 28-0 lead after one quarter.
Mahomet-Seymour had a different result, beating Canton 40-14, their first win in an opener since 2013.
Mahomet-Seymour featured an air attack that netted three touchdowns and a 100-yard ground gainer who also scored. Quarterback Wyatt Bohm threw for 279 yards, while running back Luke Johnson rumbled for 118 yards and three scores. The Bulldogs plan to start four wide receivers in Friday's contest.
Effingham's junior quarterback Tanner Pontious showed a good arm in the opener and threw for a 42-yard touchdown to Dalton Fox, but committed one of the early turnovers on a fumble that led to a St. Teresa score. Running back John Westendorf rushed for better than 90 yards.
We will be on the air at 6:45pm with pre-game information. You are encouraged to take exact change to Friday's contest. Admission is $4 for adults, $2 for students.
