The Effingham Hearts rolled to their fourth consecutive victory Friday night, blanking the Macomb Bombers 40-0 on Military Appreciation Night at Klosterman Field. The game was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com.
Effingham scored five times in the first quarter, and a touchdown 20 seconds into the second period gave the Hearts the 40-point lead that triggered a continuous clock for the rest of the game.
The Hearts scored on their first six possessions. Terrence Hill scored on a 22-yard run with 8:29 left, Braden Hasty grabbed a Macomb fumble and ran it back from 28 yards out with 7:25 remaining, Hill scored from 11 yards out to cap a 47-yard drive with 5:30 left, Lucas Vasquez scored from four yards out with 4:18 left, Nathan Shackelford, subbing for quarter Landon Wolfe, ran a misdirection play down the far sideline from 37 yards out to make it 33-0, and Hill scored from 17 yards out with 11:40 left in the second quarter to trigger the continuous clock and end the scoring.
The Hearts played few starters in the balance of the game.
Danny Hortenstine was 4-of-6 on extra point tries.
Although the Hearts had the big lead, Macomb actually had the edge in time of possession at the half because Effingham had great field position throughout, and scored quickly when they had the ball. Eventually, Effingham led in TOP 24:33 to 23:27.
Effingham registered 11 first downs, nine rushing and two passing, to just two for Macomb. The Hearts ran 37 plays, racking up 227 yards. Macomb ran 37 plays, netting 25 yards. The Hearts had two gained balls, one on Hasty's touchdown fumble recovery, and the other on a pick by Parker Seachrist.
For Effingham, Terrence Hill carried just seven times and still gained 61 yards and scored three touchdowns. Dante Latham gained 38 yards on nine carries and Ethan Kiser gained 44 yards on 15 carries.
Landon Wolfe was two-for-three passing, for 43 yards, a 15-yard catch by Jacob Miller and a 28-yard grab by Jordan McCabe.
Logan Smith nailed a punt for 39 yards, heading toward a short field. It pinned Macomb inside its 20. Hortenstine racked up 333 yards on six kickoffs; Vasquez returned a kickoff 37 yards.
The Hearts are now 4-1, while Macomb is 1-4.
Effingham's Homecoming Week is this coming week. The Hearts will host Mahomet-Seymour in a return to Apollo Conference action. The Homecoming King and Queen will be announced at halftime.
A mention that money raised by the EHS Graphic Arts class from the sale of the camouflage T-shirts throughout the past week will go to Effingham VFW Post #1769.
The Hearts also wore green patches tonight to remember Mattoon High School in the aftermath of this week's shooting incident.
