The Effingham Flaming Hearts football team begins its 2017 season Friday night.

The Hearts will travel to Breese to take on the Mater Dei Knights. Kickoff is at 7pm. Hear the action on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com. 

There's plenty of reason for optimism about the season. Effingham has 19 seniors on this year's roster, and nine starters return on defense. Back also is Landon Wolfe at quarterback. Wolfe and Lucas Vasquez shared the position last season, but Vasquez has shifted to fullback this year, complementing Terrence Hill carrying the ball. Wolfe will be spelled by sophomore Nathan Shackelford.

Special teams should be well in hand with punter Logan Smith and kicker Danny Hortenstine returning.
