Newton Ends Season in State Football Quarterfinals

Newton High School saw its season come to a close in the Class 3A State Football Quarterfinals Saturday with a 32-21 loss to Carlinville.

The score was tied at 7-7 after the opening quarter. The Eagles scored first when Tim Weber rambled 32 yards into the end zone. The point after kick was good.

But Carlinville came back when Jacob Dixon went in from 10 yards out and the point after kick tied the score.

Nothing went the Eagles' way. Running back Mitch Bierman was playing on an injured ankle and the Eagles kept turning the ball over.

Carlinville took advantage as Dixon went in from three yards out in the second quarter and then scored again on a yard run and the Cavaliers took a 20-7 halftime lead.

Dixon tallied his fourth touchdown in the third quarter on a 33 yard run for a 26-7 lead.

Newton came back with a touchdown to start the fourth quarter. Connor Brown went in from four yards out, the extra point was good and the Eagles trailed 26-14.

But Carlinville's Dixon ended up scoring his fifth touchdown, this one on a 54 yard run. The Cavaliers held a 32-14 lead.

Newton tallied a final score on a three yard run by M. Bierman and the extra point was good.

Weber hit 10 of 29 passes for 189 yards and had three intercepted. He ran 10 times for 70 yards and a score. Brown had nine carries for 83 yards and a touchdown. Connor Bierman had six carries for 94 yards. Joe Stone was the leading receiver with three catches for 116 yards. Leading in tackles were Weber and Colton Angel with nine each.

Newton ended the season with an 11-1 record.
