Newton Advances in State Football Playoffs

NEWTON -- Newton High School advanced from opening round play in the Class 3A High School Football playoffs Saturday.

The Eagles defeated Sullivan/Okaw Valley 46-21. Newton improves to 10-0 on the season and will now play host to Monticello (9-1) in the next round.

In other area games, Marshall fell to Tolono Unity in the Class 3A playoffs, 42-24. Tolono Unity, ranked 10th, improved to 7-3 and upset seventh-ranked Marshall who ended at 8-2.

Top-ranked Tuscola, in Class 1A, pounded Camp Point Central 49-7. Tuscola is now 10-0 on the season.

Carrollton defeated Red Hill (Bridgeport) in Class 1A, 40-20. Also in Class 1A, Arcola bounced Hardin Calhoun 57-16.

In Class 2A, top-ranked Pana improved to 10-0 by trouncing Georgetown-Ridge Farm 41-7. Ninth-ranked Lawrenceville won over Chester 34-7 and is now 8-2. Fifth-ranked Shelbyville fell to 12th-ranked Auburn 43-21. The Rams end the season at 7-3.

Taylorville handed Mount Zion a 36-14 loss in Class 4A. The Tornadoes, ranked third, are now 10-0. Mount Zion ends the season at 6-4.

In two other area scores, Herrin defeated Olney 52-8 and Breese Mater Dei won over Bethalto Civic Memorial 34-14.
