VIDEO: Hearts Fall at Bethalto Civic Memorial; Other Friday Scores

The Bethalto Civic Memorial Eagles defeated the Effingham Hearts in non-conference high school football action Friday night, 47-14. The game at Bethalto was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com. Watch for a video replay of the game later in the weekend.
Effingham scored on two sustained drives. The Hearts tied the game at 7-7 with 10:27 left in the second quarter on a seven-play, 77-yard drive that concluded with a five-yard touchdown pass from Hudson Graham to Joe Nieman. The other Effingham score came with 3:51 left in the third quarter at the end of a 13-play, 83-yard drive culminating on a five-yard touchdown pass from Graham to Blake White.
Those drives were more than offset, though, by seven Civic Memorial touchdowns, including six rushing scores and one on a punt return for touchdown.
John Whitworth did the bulk of the rushing for Civic Memorial, gaining 188 yards on 17 carries and scoring three touchdowns. Corey Price picked up 59 yards on five carries including two touchdowns, and Zach Williams rushed for 34 yards on four carries with one touchdown.
Meanwhile, Civic Memorial quarterback Adam Hill attempted 34 passes and completed 15 for 141 yards with one interception.
Drew Vasquez rushed for 82 yards on 17 carries to pace Effingham. Also for Effingham: Hudson Graham seven carries for -3 yards, Jordan McCabe four rushes for two yards, Brandon Marschewski two carries for zero net yards, Brayden Hasty one carry for one yard, and Zane Thilker three rushes for 14 yards.
Graham attempted 19 passes for Effingham and completed 11 for 132 yards and two touchdowns with one interception. Lucas Vasquez completed a nine-yard pass in his only attempt.
Trevor Kreke caught five passes for 87 yards, Joe Nieman three for 10 yards and a touchdown, Drew Vasquez two for 30 yards, Blake White one for five yards and a score, and Brayden Hasty a catch for nine yards.
Also for Effingham, Graham punted seven times for 222 yards, Vasquez returned the only Civic Memorial punt for two yards, Vasquez had a 40-yard interception, Sean Zerrusen kicked off three times for 112 yards, and Cory Osborn returned three kickoffs for 30 yards, while Trevor Kreke returned three for 23 yards.
Effingham racked up 226 yards to 440 yards for Civic Memorial. The Hearts had 12 first downs to 21 for CM, including six by rushing and six by passing. The Hearts ran 55 plays to 64 for Civic Memorial. Effingham had eight penalties for 70 yards, while Civic Memorial had seven for 60 yards.
Effingham drops to 1-2 on the season, while Civic Memorial is now 3-0 for the campaign.
Next Friday, the Hearts begin Apollo Conference play, heading to Charleston to take on the Trojans.
