(Glendale, AZ) -- Malcom Butler intercepted Russell Wilson in the end zone to clinch a 28-24 victory in Super Bowl 49 for the New England Patriots over the Seattle Seahawks from University of Phoenix Stadium. Tom Brady gave the Patriots a four-point lead, finding Julian Edelman on a three-yard score with 2:02 left in the fourth quarter, concluding a ten-play, 64-yard drive.
The game-winning touchdown was Brady's fourth TD throw of the game as he won his third Super Bowl MVP Award. He completed 37-of-50 passes for 328 yards, but was intercepted twice. It was Brady and Belichick's fourth Super Bowl victory together. Edelman had nine catches and 109 yards receiving. Rob Gronkowski, Danny Amendola and Brandon LaFell scored the other three TDs.
Seattle went into the fourth quarter with a 10-point lead before allowing the Pats to reach the end zone twice in the final eight minutes. Seahawks wide receiver Chris Matthews, who never caught an NFL pass coming into the game, surprisingly piled up four catches for 109 yards and a touchdown. Wilson threw for 247 yards and two touchdowns, in addition to the fateful interception. Marshawn Lynch compiled 102 yards and 24 carries and hit pay dirt. Seattle failed to become the ninth team to win back-to-back Super Bowls.
Brady Wins Third Super Bowl MVP
(Glendale, AZ) -- Tom Brady and Joe Montana have another reason to be mentioned in the same sentence. Brady joined Montana as the only two three-time Super Bowl MVP's. Brady threw for 328 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions in New England's 28-24 victory against the Seahawks in Super Bowl 49. Brady's fourth and final touchdown throw was from three-yards out to Julian Edelman to give New England a four-point lead with 2:02 left in the fourth quarter. He also claimed the award in Super Bowl 36 and Super Bowl 38 when the Pats beat the Rams and Panthers, respectively.
Bettis Headed To HoF, Warner And Pace Miss Out
The results were mixed for three high profile former Rams players over the weekend. Running back Jerome Bettis is headed to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, while quarterback Kurt Warner and left tackle Orlando Pace missed out. Bettis only played three seasons with the Rams organization, two in Los Angeles and one in St. Louis. He spent the rest of his career with the Steelers.
