Vikings Blow Away Rams
(St. Louis, MO) -- Wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson had 102 yards rushing with a touchdown as the Vikings exploded for a 34-6 win over the Rams at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis. Patterson also had 26 yards receiving while Matt Cassel threw for 170 yards and two touchdowns. Greg Jennings had 58 yards on six catches with a TD while Adrian Peterson ran for 75 yards for Minnesota. Harrison Smith took an interception back 81 yards for a score late in the fourth to seal the win. Shaun Hill threw for 81 yards and an interception before suffering a thigh injury and giving way to Austin Davis, who was 16-of-23 for 192 yards and an interception. Brian Quick had seven catches for 99 yards in the loss.
Just one game in and the Rams are already down to their third-string quarterback. Austin Davis took over for Shaun Hill, who missed Sunday's second half with a quadriceps injury. Davis threw for 192 yards, a pick and was sacked four times. The Rams lost Sam Bradford to a torn ACL in preseason.
Bills Take Down Bears In OT
(Chicago, IL) -- Dan Carpenter kicked a 27-yard field goal in overtime to send the Bills to a 23-20 win over the Bears at Soldier Field in Chicago. It was Carpenter's third field goal of the game. C.J. Spiller ran for 53 yards and caught a touchdown while EJ Manuel threw for 173 yards with the TD and one interception. Fred Jackson ran for 61 yards in the win for Buffalo. Robbie Gould tied the game with a field goal in the final minute for Chicago, which had three turnovers. Jay Cutler threw for 349 yards with two interceptions and two scores while Matt Forte ran for 82 yards and had another 87 yards receiving. Brandon Marshall had eight catches for 71 yards and a TD while Martellus Bennett also hauled in a score in the loss.
Bears wide receiver Alshon Jeffery left Sunday's season-opening loss with a hamstring injury. Jeffery spent most of the second half on the sideline after wracking up 71 yards receiving. Coach Marc Trestman says Jeffery is day-to-day going forward.
With the opener in the rear-view mirror, the Bears are already thinking about this week. Chicago hits the road to face the San Francisco 49ers on NBC's Sunday Night Football next. The Niners cruised to a 28-17 win over the Cowboys in their opener Sunday.
Bryant Lifts Falcons Past Saints
(Atlanta, GA) -- Matt Bryant drilled a 51-yard field goal as time expired in regulation and nailed a 52-yard try in overtime as the Falcons downed the Saints 37-34 at the Georgia Dome. Bryant's winning attempt came after Atlanta recovered a fumble from Marques Colston. Matt Ryan finished 31-for-43 for a franchise-record 448 yards and three touchdowns. Julio Jones made seven grabs for 116 yards while Roddy White had five catches for 72 yards and a score. Steven Jackson ran for 52 yards in the win as Atlanta earned just its fourth win over the Saints in 17 meetings. Drew Brees tossed for 333 yards with a touchdown and interception for New Orleans. Mark Ingram ran for 60 yards with two scores while Colston hauled in five passes for 110 yards in the loss
Suisham Boots Steelers Past Browns
(Pittsburgh, PA) -- Shaun Suisham booted a 41-yard field goal as time expired to lift the Steelers in a 30-27 win over the Browns at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh. Le'Veon Bell ran for 109 yards and a touchdown while Antonio Brown finished with five catches for 116 yards and a score. Ben Roethlisberger was 23-of-34 for 365 yards with a TD and interception for Pittsburgh, which blew a 24-point lead before winning on the game's final play. Browns rookie Terrance West ran for 100 yards on 16 carries after Ben Tate left the game with a knee injury. Isaiah Crowell ran for a pair of scores while Brian Hoyer threw for 230 yards and a touchdown for Cleveland.
Eagles Rally To Win Over Jaguars
(Philadelphia, PA) -- The Eagles rallied from a 17-point halftime deficit to rout the Jaguars 34-17 at Lincoln Financial Field. Nick Foles threw for 322 yards with two touchdowns after losing two fumbles and throwing an interception in the first half. Jeremy Maclin had four catches for 97 yards and a score while Zach Ertz also hauled in a TD. LeSean McCoy ran for 74 yards and had another 41 yards receiving for Philadelphia. Allen Hurns had four catches for 110 yards and two touchdowns for Jacksonville. Chad Henne threw for 266 yards with the two TDs while Toby Gerhart ran for 42 yards on 18 carries in defeat.
Jets Get Past Raiders
(East Rutherford, NJ) -- Chris Ivory ran for 102 yards and a touchdown as the Jets turned away the Raiders 19-14 at MetLife Stadium. Chris Johnson added 68 yards on the ground and caught a touchdown while Geno Smith was 23-of-28 for 221 yards with a TD and an interception. Eric Decker made five catches for 74 yards in the victory for New York. Rookie Derek Carr was 20-for-32 for 151 yards and two touchdowns for Oakland, which was held to 25 rushing yards. Rod Streater and James Jones each caught TDs for the Raiders in the loss.
Bengals Hold Off Ravens
(Baltimore, MD) -- Andy Dalton threw for 301 yards and a touchdown as the Bengals held off the Ravens 23-16 at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. A.J. Green hauled in six balls for 131 yards, including a go-ahead 77-yard touchdown with just under five minutes left. The score came after Baltimore rallied from a 15-point deficit to take a one-point lead. Giovani Bernard made six grabs for 62 yards and also ran for 48 yards while Cincinnati's defense forced two turnovers. Joe Flacco was 35-of-62 for 345 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Justin Forsett ran for 70 yards and a score while Steve Smith caught seven balls for 118 yards and a TD in defeat. Dennis Pitta added 10 catches for 83 yards for Baltimore.
Texans Snap Slide, Beat Redskins
(Houston, TX) -- Arian Foster ran for 103 yards as the Texans grabbed a 17-6 win over the Redskins at NRG Stadium in Houston. Ryan Fitzpatrick threw for 206 yards and a touchdown for the Texans, who snapped a 14-game losing streak dating back to last season. Andre Johnson had six catches for 93 yards while DeAndre Hopkins added four grabs for 89 yards and a TD. Alfred Blue also recovered a blocked punt for a score while J.J. Watt had a sack, blocked an extra point, recovered a fumble and knocked down a pass. Robert Griffin the Third was 29-of-37 for 267 yards and fumbled twice in the second half for Washington while Alfred Morris had 14 carries for 91 yards. Pierre Garcon made 10 catches for 77 yards in defeat.
Titans Blow Out Chiefs
(Kansas City, MO) -- Jake Locker threw for 266 yards and two touchdowns as the Titans held down the Chiefs for a 26-10 win at Arrowhead Stadium. Shonn Greene ran for 71 yards while Kendall Wright and Delanie Walker each hauled in touchdowns from Locker. Tennessee's defense forced three Alex Smith interceptions in the win. Smith finished 19-of-35 for 202 yards with a TD pass to Anthony Fasano. Smith also ran for 36 yards to lead Kansas City. Donnie Avery made seven grabs for 84 yards in the loss.
Dolphins Take Down Patriots
(Miami, FL) -- The Dolphins blanked the Patriots in the second half to grab a season-opening 33-20 win at Sun Life Stadium. Knowshon Moreno ran for 134 yards and a touchdown while Mike Wallace had seven catches for 81 yards and a score. Lamar Miller also caught a touchdown from Ryan Tannehill, who finished 18-of-32 for 178 yards with the two TDs and an interception for Miami. Tom Brady tossed for 249 yards with a touchdown to Rob Gronkowski, who had four grabs for 40 yards. Julian Edelman had six catches for 95 yards along with 21 rushing yards for New England, which was penalized nine times for 100 yards. Shane Vereen also found the endzone for the Pats, who suffered their first loss in an opener since 2003.
Panthers Drop Buccaneers
(Tampa, FL) -- The Panthers defense held strong, allowing 264 yards of total offense and forcing three turnovers en route to a 20-14 win over the Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium. With Cam Newton sitting out, Derek Anderson threw for 230 yards and two touchdowns in his place. First-round pick Kelvin Benjamin caught six balls for 92 yards and a score and Greg Olsen grabbed a TD pass to help Carolina to it's first opening-day win since 2007. Josh McCown tossed for 183 yards and two touchdowns with two picks for Tampa, which falls to 0-and-1 for the second straight year. Doug Martin carried the ball nine times for nine yards and missed part of the second half with a knee injury.
49ers Ride Turnovers To Win Over Cowboys
(Arlington, TX) -- The 49ers forced four turnovers and rolled the Cowboys 28-17 in Week One from AT&T Stadium. Colin Kaepernick threw for 201 yards and two scores in the win with Vernon Davis grabbing both TDs. Carlos Hyde found the end zone on the ground and Frank Gore ran for 66 yards to become the 29th player in NFL history to reach 10,000 career rushing yards. Chris Culliver returned a fumble for a 35-yard touchdown on the second play of the game. The 49ers have won four straight openers. Tony Romo threw three interceptions and a touchdown in the loss. DeMarco Murray rushed for 118 yards and a score while Terrance Williams caught the lone touchdown pass.
Manning Gets Win Against Former Team
(Denver, CO) -- Peyton Manning and the Broncos pulled out a 31-24 win against his former team, the Colts at Mile High on "Sunday Night Football." Manning and Julius Thomas connected on three second quarter touchdowns helping Denver jump out to a 24-0 lead. Manning finished with 269 yards through the air and Thomas was on the receiving end of 104 of them. Montee Ball added a three-yard TD run in the fourth quarter and finished with 67 yards on the ground. Andrew Luck attempted to manufacture one of his patented fourth quarter comebacks, but fell short. Luck found Dwayne Allen and Hakeem Nicks for touchdowns in the final eight minutes, but a fourth-down pass to Reggie Wayne fell incomplete with less then two minutes left to end the rally. The former number-one pick out of Stanford compiled 270 yards, two TDs and two interceptions. Wayne hauled in nine catches for 98 yards in the defeat.
