NFL Draft Ends
(New York, NY) -- The NFL Draft is in the books. The event came to a close on Saturday with Rounds Four through Seven. The St. Louis Rams had four picks in the final round, using pick number 249 on Missouri defensive end Michael Sam. Sam announced he is gay earlier this year. His teammate at Missouri, cornerback E.J. Gaines, was picked 188th overall by the Rams.
Despite the NFL Draft being over, the Rams are still adding players. The team signed a handful of undrafted free agents over the weekend. Among them was former Tulsa running back Trey Watts. He rushed for over 1,300 yards and 11 touchdowns last season.
Jimmy Garoppolo was so stunned to learn his draft fate Friday night, he fumbled to find his voice. Growing up in Arlington Heights, Ill., Garoppolo modeled his game growing up after New England Patriots three-time Super Bowl-winner Tom Brady. Now the Walter Payton Award-winning quarterback from Eastern Illinois University will spend the next few years learning from his idol. It also appears that backup Ryan Mallett is the first Patriots quarterback Garoppolo will be groomed to replace.
The Bears completed an eight-man draft class over the weekend. Chicago took Arizona State defensive tackle Will Sutton in the third round before selecting Arizona running back Ka'Deem Carey in the fourth. Minnesota free safety Brock Vereen was also picked in the fourth round.
