Area Runners, Teams Advance To Cross Country Sectionals

City and area teams and individual runners advanced to sectionals in high school cross country after regional action took place Saturday.

CLASS 1A ROBINSON REGIONAL

Cumberland, Effingham St. Anthony and Newton went one-two-three at the Class 1A Robinson Boys Regional to advance as teams. Also advancing were Fairfield, Webber Township (Bluford), Paris and Robinson.

Cumberland claimed the regional boys championship with 68 points followed by St. Anthony 91, Newton 104, Fairfield 111, Webber Township (Bluford) 112, Paris 138, Robinson 169, Marshall 190, Dieterich 213, Casey-Westfield 264, Teutopolis 281 and Mount Carmel 347.

Cumberland's Cameron Roedl won the individual championship with a time of 15:54.35. Also competing for the Pirates were Kaleb Bierman 13th in 16:58.07, Riley Morgan 15th in 17:01.02, Brett Matusas 17th in 17:07.72, Gavin Whitaker 22nd in 17:22.71, Gavin Ray 30th in 17:57.76 and Kade Bradley 32nd in 17:58.40.

The top seven teams along with the top five runners not members of those teams, advance to sectional competition at Cumberland High School Saturday, Nov. 2.

Individuals advancing from the Robinson Regional were Trevor Crutcher (Dieterich) who finished sixth in 16:11.14, Steven Hendrixson (Marshall) 14th in 16:58.73, Eli Richardson (Casey-Westfield) 16th in 17:05.17, Jackson Green (Marshall) 27th in 17:43.26 and Turner Graham (Marshall) 38th in 18:16.28.

In the girls meet, Fairfield won with 50 points followed by St. Anthony 53, Marshall 68, Robinson 72, Newton 104, Dieterich 150 and Teutopolis 165. All seven teams advance to sectional action.

St. Anthony's Isabella Keller took first place with a time of 16:50.36. Aubrey Denning finished third in 17:40.03 for the Bulldogs.

Newton's Layna Marshall was fifth in 19:36.34.

Also advancing as individuals were Kayla Clark (Casey-Westfield) who finished seventh in 20:00.85, Atalie Osborn (Neoga) who finished 28th in 23:08.59, Addison Mast (Neoga) who finished 35th in 23:57.79, Lydia Hulbert (Webber Township, Bluford) who finished 37th in 24:10.97 and Lily Wyrick (Paris) who finished 41st in 24:30.84.

Class 1A Shelbyville Regional

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City advances as a team from the Shelbyville Boys Regional with a fifth place finish.

Winning the boys title was Monticello with 91 points followed by Decatur St. Teresa 97, Gillespie 98, Shelbyville 103, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 106, Cerro Gordo-Bement 161, Litchfield 177 and Staunton 202 and those seven teams advance. Not advancing were Sullivan 219, Greenville 231,  Carlinville 265 and Altamont 321.

The top seven teams and the top five runners, not members of those qualifying teams, advance to sectional action.

CHBC's August Cosart took eighth in 16:00.83. Other team members advancing were Griffin Vaughn 11th in 16;17.31, Aiden Wallace 15th in 17:00.38; Deacon Sutter 36th in 18:06.84, Hayden Sarver 40th in 18:14.53, Porter Lilly 48th in 18:36.85 and Kaiden Garrido 55th in 18:55.94.

No area individuals advanced.

In the girls meet, Shelbyville won with 29 points followed by Monticello 45, Decatur St. Teresa 79, Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond 93, Moweaqua Central A&M 131, Gillespie 153 and Carlinville 169. All seven teams advance.

Cowden-Herrick had two runners competing. Zoe Sarver finished 19th with a time of 23:23.64 to advance to the sectional. Laney Doty finished 37th in 24:40.08 but did not advance.

Class 2A Mattoon Regional

Effingham and North Clay (Louisville) competed in the Class 2A Mattoon Regional.

In the boys meet, Mahomet-Seymour won with 56 points followed by Mount Zion 84, Champaign Central 85, Charleston 100, Richland County, Olney 116, Urbana 136, Rantoul 178, Effingham 238, Mattoon 241, Danville 247, Champaign Centennial 333 and North Clay 337.

The first six teams advance and those included Mahomet-Seymour, Mount Zion, Champaign Central, Charleston, Richland County, Olney and Urbana. The top five runners not members of those teams also advance.

Champaign Central's Caleb Mathis won with a time of 15:14.92.

Effingham's Alex Gordon took sixth in 16:13.79 and will advance as an individual.

In the girls meet, Mahomet-Seymour won with 64 points followed by Champaign Centennial 81, Richland County, Olney 95, Effingham 106, Mount Zion 110, Champaign Central 120, Mattoon 141 Urbana 188, Charleston 225 and Rantoul 280.

Effingham advances as a team. Emery Spicer took sixth place with a time of 19:13.37 while Jessica Larsen was seventh in 19:17.89, Baylee Summers 10th in 19:30.41, Morgan Springer 42nd in 21:37.37, Laney Myers 49th in 22:18.95, Alaina Miller 62nd in 23:45.64 and Lauren Etheridge 66th in 25:04.49.

Effingham runners advancing will head to the Richland County Sectional Saturday, Nov. 2 with the girls running at 10 a.m. and boys scheduled for 11 a.m.
