The Effingham Junior High School cross country team competed Saturday at the Parkside Junior High Invitational. There were around 60 total teams.

The boys varsity finished 11th out of 52 complete teams. Leading the boys was seventh-grader Jared Klingler placing eighth out of 381 boys in the varsity race, earning himself a medal.

Also competing for the boys were K. Rohr, 57th, T. Smith 72nd, M. Overbeck 105th and J. Flack 112th.

Leading the girls varsity race was eighth-grader L. Pankau placing 124th out of 357 runners. Following Pankau were seventh-graders K. Bierman 134th, A. Schackmann 193rd, sixth-grader K. Rohr 197th and eighth-grader A Lotz placing 210th.

For the boys open, they were led by seventh-grader M. Wyckoff placing 28th out of 687 runners, eighth-graders B. Brown 48th, E. Vargas 49th, T. Devall 73rd and A. Bohnhoff 110th.

The girls open race was led by sixth-grader S. Wiedman 94th out of 513 runners, eighth-grader J. Larsen 188th, sixth-graders K. Percival 247th, S. Adams 284th and K. Mulheron 375th.

 

At Shelbyville

Effingham St. Anthony claimed first place in the boys race while the girls placed third at the Shelbyville Invitational Saturday.

The boys won with 60 points followed by Shelbyville 80, Charleston 106, Mattoon 132, Altamont Lutheran 143, Dieterich 191, Jasper County 203, Litchfield 206, Villa Grove 228, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 235, Teutopolis 239, Sullivan 286, St. John Lutheran 355, Trinity Lutheran 392, Marshall 412 and Cumberland 440. Other teams competing but without a team score were Bement, Decarur Our Lady of Lourdes, Oakland Lake Crest, Findlay Okaw and Assumption.

Charlie Bierman finished second for the Bullpups with a time of 11:57 while Max Schuette was third in 11:58. Blake Verdeyen was 12th in 12:32, Braxton Schultz 17th in 12:42, Grayson Bloemer 33rd in 13:32, Will Ludwig 38th in 13:30 and Reed Schumacher 46th in 13:39.

In the girls race, Shelbyville was the team champion with 37 followed by Jasper County 88, St. Anthony 91, Oakland Lake Crest 157, Sullivan 168, Bement 172, Charleston 174, Litchfield  226, Marshall 239, Teutopolis 255, Okaw 267, Mattoon 305, Cumberland 340, Dieterich 343, St. John Lutheran 351 and Villa Grove 455. Other teams competing but without a team score were Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City, Trinity Lutheran, Altamont Lutheran, Assumption, Our Lady of Lourdes and Sacred Heart.

St. Anthony's Nora Niebrugge finished seventh in 13:12 followed by Bella Schultz eighth in 13:13. Also competing were 22. Maeve Nieibrugge, 14;13; 24. Hannah Frisbie, 14:14; 30. Amelia Janis, 14:32
