Newton Competes In Patriot C.C. Invite

PEORIA -- Newton High School competed in the Patriot Cross Country Invitationals Saturday.

The boys squad finished second out of 33 teams. The Eagles' Clay Bergbower finished 12th in 16:12.7 followed by Nick Shamhart 17th in 16:18.9, Luke Weber 30th in 16:32.4, Owen Mahaffey 40th in 16:44.5, Luis Zavala 54th in 17:00.6, Ben Street 60th in 17:07.2 and Brock Probst 63rd in 17:07.8.

Winning the meet was Port Byron Riverdale's Tommy Murray in 15:03.1.

In the girls meet, Newton finished eighth out of 32 teams.

Layna Marshall finished 25th in 19:28.4, Alexis Hetzer 63rd in 20:45.5, Shay Bennett 67th in 20:58.7, Natalie Kistner 83rd in 21:19.5, Ella Radke 101st in 21:42.7, Lily Yager 149th in 23:18.2 and Taylor Clough 162nd in 24:09.9.

Winning the meet was Marshall's Molly Farrell in 17:17.3.

Newton's Hayden Borgic won the boys junior varsity race with a time of 17:17.5 with Isaac Street eighth in 18:03.6 and Jackson Sornberger 13th in 18:16.8.
