Area Cross Country Runners Advance To Sectionals

Newton High School won the team championship of the Class 1A Robinson Boys Regional easily with 24 points followed by Robinson 106, Fairfield 106, Salem 115, Marshall 123, Effingham St. Anthony 125, Cumberland 156, Mount Carmel 226, Altamont 227, Dieterich 241, Teutopolis 259 and Grayville 371.

Advancing from regionals to sectionals are the top seven teams and the top five individuals not members of quailfying teams.

Heading on to sectional as a team were Newton, St. Anthony and Cumberland, along with Robinson, Fairfield, Salem and Marshall.

Newton had five of its 10 runners finish in the top 10. Winning was Flora's Isaac Stanford with a time of 16:06.84.

From Newton were Nick Zwilling second in 16:19.38, Griffen Elder fourth in 16:25.18, Owen Mahaffey fifth in 16:28.77, Luke Weber sixth in 16:35.35 and Clay Bergbower seventh in 16:45.90.

Scoring for St. Anthony were Griffen Elder fifth in 16:25.18, Conlan Walsh 15th in 17:10.50, Aidan Braunecker 21st in 17:33.68, Max Sager 41st in 18:48.75 and Nick Wiedman 57th in 19:39.93.

Scoring for Cumberland were Wiley Peters 16th in 17:12.50, Hank Warfel 32nd in 18:17.70, Jack Pruemer 56th in 18:35.62, Riley Morgan 42nd in 18:49.75 and Michael Beaumont 47th in 19:08.20.

In the girls meet, Marshall won with 37 points followed by Robinson 41, Newton 66, St. Anthony 131, Salem 147, Dieterich 149, Neoga 159 and Fairfield 181.

Advancing as teams are Newton, St. Anthony, Dieterich, Neoga, Marshall, Robinson and Salem.

Winning the meet was Brooklyn Bender of Marshall in 18:23.6. Newton's Rylea Borgic was third in 18:45.3 while Natalie Kistner was eighth in 20:22.2 and Alexis Hetzer took 10th in 20:45.3. Also scoring for the Eagles were Ella Radke 22nd in 21:39.8 and Taylor Slough 39th in 22:30.5.

St. Anthony's top finisher was Emma Helmink 11th in 20:46.9. Also scoring for the Bulldogs were Taylor Miller 30th in 22:01.2, Ava Faber 37th in 22:26.6, Riley Guy 44th in 23:37.7 and Grace NIebrugge 52nd in 23:54.3.

Scoring for Dieterich were Kaitlyn Boerngen 24th in 21:42.8, Ella Kreke 36th in 22:23.5, Ruby Westendorf 43rd in 23:18.8, Kady Tegeler 47th in 23:47.8 and Cortney Brummer 51st in 23:50.6.

Scoring for Neoga were Maggie Clark 26th in 21:45.7, Ani Edwards 28th in 21:54.5, Lexie Fletcher 49th in 23:50.2, Abbagayl Howald 53rd in 23:55.8 and Emma Butler 56th in 24:11.6.

T-town's Olivia Copple finished 12th in 20:55.0 and will advance as an individual.

The sectional is Saturday at Decatur St. Teresa with the girls at 10 a.m. and the boys at 11 a.m.

Class 1A Tuscola Regional

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City had three runners competing in the Class 1A Tuscola Boys Regional but they did not advance.

Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond won the team title with 44 points followed by Monticello 76, Decatur St. Teresa 79, Shelbyville 81, Tuscola 93, Heyworth 182, Clinton 201, Bement 2315, Villa Grove 248, Argenta-Oreana 270 and Sullivan 321.

Winning the individual title was Logan Beckmier of ALAH in 15:49.70.

CHBC's Aiden Wallace was 44th in 18:29.26 while Zander Merrifield finished 51st in 18:57.71 and Beau Doedtman was 70th in 21:39.66.

Class 2A Olney Regional

Effingham competed in the Class 2A Olney Regional and the girls advanced as a team while the boys will be sending two indivdiuals on to the Class 2A Decatur MacArthur Sectional Saturday. The girls meet is 10 a.m. and the boys at 11 a.m.

Winning the girls meet was Mahomet-Seymour with 44 points followed by Champaign Central 76, Champaign Centennial 92, Effingham 103, Urbana 115, Charleston 141, Olney 147 and Mount Vernon 165.

The individual champion was Ava Boyd of Mahomet-Seymour in 19:13.78.

Effingham's Jessica Larson finished fifth in 19:21.35 while Kayleigh Koester was 14th in 20:31.9. Also scoring for the Hearts were Haddie Hill 23rd in 21:07.40, Morgan Springer 27th in 21:40.76 and Allison Miller 42d in 22:51.35.

In the boys meet, Mahomet-Seymour won with 47 points followedb y Champaign Central 81, Urbana 86, Mount Vernon 105, Olney 152, Mattoon 161, Rantoul 166, Effingham 169, Champaign Centennial 173 and Charleston 232.

The individual champion was Mattoon's Brock Davee in 15:29.71.

Effingham's Andrew Donaldson finished eighth in 16:35.33 and Garrett Wagoner 19th in 17:05.92. Both those runners advance to the Class 2A Sectional.
