Area Junior High Runners Advance to State

St. Anthony boys and girls cross country teams will be heading to State.

CHRISMAN -- The Effingham St. Anthony Junior High boys claimed first while the girls captured second place in the Class 1A Chrisman Cross Country Sectionals Saturday.

The Bullpups won the boys meet with 29 points followed by Decatur Our Lady of Lourdes 64, Casey-Westfield 98, Villa Grove 113, Heritage 122, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 161, Okaw Valley 169, Decatur Johns Hill 214, Salt Fork 257, Oakland Lake Crest 10 and Mattoon St. John 11.

Winning the individual title was Decatur Our Lady of Lourdes' Caleb Kernaghan with a time of 11:53.

St. Anthony's Giovanni Bucio finished third in 12:08 followed by Griffen Elder fifth in 12:35, Nick Wiedman sixth in 12:47. Conlan Walsh seventh in 12:52 and Aidan Braunecker eighth in 12:56 to round out the scoring.

Advancing are the top three teams and top five runners not members of quaifying teams. Teams advancing were St. Anthony, Decatur Our Lady of Lourdes and Casey-Westfield.

Cowden-Herrick's Kenneth Robbins and Aiden Wallace advanced as individuals, finishing fourth in 12:33 and 17th in 13:18 respectively.

Winning the girls meet was Casey-Westfield with 30 points followed by St. Anthony 54, Villa Grove 91, Decatur Johns Hill 112, Okaw Valley 155, Heritage 151, Decatur Dennis 166 and Chrisman-Scottland 175.

Winning individually was Heritage's Lillian Montgomery with a time of 13:27.

St. Anthony's Anna Faber took seventh in 15:05 followed by Emma Helmink ninth in 15:11, Ava Faber 13th in 15:24, Allison Geen 16th in 15:42 and Sophia Seagle 17th in 15:44 for the scoring.

Casey-Westfield, St. Anthony and Villa Grove advance from the girls meet as teams.

The top three teams and top five runners not members of qualifying teams advance to the Class 1A State which will be held at Maxwell Park in Normal. The girls will run at 9:30 a.m. while the boys are scheduled for a 10:15 a.m. start.

Class 2A

Jasper County advanced in both boys and girls sectionals Saturday as teams.

In the boys meet, Robinson Nuttall won with 52 points followed by Shelbyville Moulton 59, Jasper County 65, fourth place unreadable, Marshall 137, Teutopolis 181, Effingham 188, East St. Louis Lincoln 205, Carlinville 232 and Staunton 234.

Jasper County's scoring came from Owen Mahffey third in 11:57.20, Luke Weber seventh in 12:19.28, Luis Zavala 11th in 12:34.05; Gage Reynolds 25th in 12:58.35 and Clay Bergbower 26th in 13:00.91.

Effingham's scorers were Andrew Lotz 19th in 12:48.07; Jacob Weaver 20th in 12:49.07; Tyler Nohren 44th in 14:00.08, Payton Bushue 52nd in 14:44.51 and Brady Stortzum 68th in 15:19.31.

T-town's top finisher was Gavin Tegeler 12th in 12:36.14 and he advanced as an individual.

Advancing as teams were Robinson Nuttall, Shelbyville Moulton and Jasper County.

In the girls meet, Robinson Nuttall was the champion with 43 points followed by Shelbyville Moultin 86, Jasper County 95, Taylorville 127, Roxana 147, Effingham 170, Marshall 200, East St. Louis Lincoln 208, Cumberland 226, Girard North Mac 246 and Carlinville 251.

Scoring for Jasper County were Camryn Martin seventh in 13:31.10; Ella Radke 12th in 13:35.78; Karasyn Martin 19th in 14:06.03; Cierrah Utley 26th in 14:30.10 and Natalie Kistner 31st in 14:54.53.

Effingham had two runners advance, Marah Kirk who took second in 13:11.57 and Jessica Larson who finished 13th in 13:36.93.

Cumberland's Ani Edwards also advanced individually with a 16th place finish in 13:55.57.

The top three teams and top five runners not members of qualifying teams advance to the Class 2A State which will be held at Normal West High School. The girls will run at 11 a.m. while the boys are scheduled for an 11:45 a.m. start.
