The Effingham Lady Hearts set a single-season record for wins Wednesday night with a 60-46 victory over the Mattoon Lady Wave. In the process, Effingham advanced to the championship game of their own Class 3A Regional Tournament.  The game was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com

Effingham had a great shooting night, making 22 of 36 shots for 61%.  Despite that, the Lady Hearts could not put away Mattoon until late in the game.

Mattoon came right and hit two three-pointers to start the fourth quarter, cutting the Hearts' lead to 43-39, but Effingham was able to finally begin to take command of the game and outscored Mattoon 17-7 for the rest of the period to win by 14 points.

In addition to the 61% shooting from the field, Effingham made 11 of 16 foul shots, grabbed 19 rebounds, committed 13 turnovers and hit five of 13 three-pointers.

Mattoon made 19 of 45 shots for 42%.  Mattoon made four of eight foul shots, pulled down 16 rebounds, committed 17 turnovers and made four of 17 three-point tries.

Josie Zerrusen and Lauren Stephenson shared scoring honors for the Lady Hearts with 17 points apiece, with Stephenson going seven for seven from the field.  Caitlin Kaufman hit some big three-point shots to total 11 points.  Also for the Lady Hearts: Jantzen Michael seven, Brittany Beals six, and Stephanie Robb two points.

Samantha Thompson led Mattoon with 13 points while Kaitlyn Bath scored 12 points and freshman Avery Jackson 11 points.

Effingham improved to 27-3 on the season, the most wins ever in a season for an Effingham girls team.  Mattoon finishes the season with a 12-16 record.
