St. Anthony and Teutopolis both lost their games at the 2nd Annual Wooden Shoes Boys Shootout in Teutopolis Saturday.

Paris defeated the Bulldogs 52-42 while Mt. Zion edged the Wooden Shoes 50-49.  Both games were heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com.

PARIS 52, ST. ANTHONY 42

The Bulldogs had the early momentum in this game, while Paris couldn't buy a basket.  St. Anthony led the contest 10-7 after one quarter and held a 23-17 edge at halftime.  Paris started hitting the shots they'd missed early once the second half got underway and outscored the Bulldogs 15-7 to lead 32-30 after three quarters.  The Tigers outpointed the Bulldogs 20-12 in the fourth quarter to win by 10.

Paris hit just two of 15 shots in the first quarter, but 15 of their last 31 over the final three quarters.  The Tigers were money at the foul line, hitting 13 of 14 and that made the difference.

St. Anthony hit 18 of 43 shots for 42%, but just two of 13 from three-point range.  St. Anthony only had five foul shots and made four of them.  16 turnovers were a problem, especially nine before intermission when the Bulldogs had the chance to extend their lead. St. Anthony grabbed 29 rebounds.

Riley Spencer led Paris with 20 points, 15 in the second half.  Austin Temples scored 13 points.

Alex Hoelscher had a big first half for the Bulldogs, scoring 13 points and grabbing eight rebounds.  Paris held him down in the second half, though, as Hoelscher scored just four points.  He finished with 17 points and 13 rebounds.

St. Anthony is 18-8 on the season, while Paris improved to 15-8.

MT. ZION 50, TEUTOPOLIS 49

The Braves led at the start and at the finish in this one.

Mt. Zion hit five of their first six shots and led the game 14-7 after one quarter.  Cody Will shook loose in the second quarter, though, and keyed a Wooden Shoe comeback.  Will scored nine in the period and Teutopolis outscored the Braves 16-8 in the period and the Shoes held a 23-22 lead at halftime.  The third quarter was wild and wooly as T-Town outscored Mt. Zion 15-14 to lead 38-36 heading to the fourth quarter.

Mt. Zion got on a roll in the fourth period and the Shoes had to play catch-up.  Teutopolis suffered a major blow when Cody Will reinjured his shoulder and collarbone area late in the contest.  Will sat on the sidelines with ice on his shoulder as the last couple of minutes of play elapsed.  The shoulder will be checked to guard against any further damage to the area that was originally injured during the St. Anthony Shootout a month ago.

The Shoes also played without Bobby Wenthe who was injured in a car crash shortly after leaving practice Thursday evening.

Teutopolis never quit; after falling behind by four with seconds left, the Shoes worked it into the corner where Reed Hardiek hit a three at the buzzer, but it left the Shoes down by one.

The Shoes hit just 16 of 41 shots for 39%, but made all eight of their foul shots, turned the ball over 17 times, grabbed 25 rebounds and made nine of 24 three-pointers.

Mt. Zion hit 49% of their shots, 17 of 35, made 12 of 18 foul shots, turned the ball over 12 times, grabbed 17 rebounds and made four of 10 three-point attempts.

Mt. Zion improved to 14-10 with the victory; Teutopolis is now 16-8 on the campaign.
