St. Anthony, Stew-Stras Eliminated at Eighth Grade State Tournaments

The St. Anthony Bullpups and the Stewardson-Strasburg Comets both lost in quarterfinal play at their respective eighth grade state tournaments, eliminating them from further action.
St. Anthony lost a heartbreaker to Carthage 37-36 at the 8-2A Tournament at Downs Tri-Valley High School. Both teams struggled with the others defense in the early minutes, but Carthage led 12-9 after one quarter. The teams traded leads in the second quarter, but Carthage held a 22-19 lead at halftime.
A 7-5 edge in the third quarter left Carthage leading 29-24 after three quarters. St. Anthony had one last surge in the fourth quarter and tied the game on a three-pointer by Cade Walsh. Walsh hit two free throws with :55 left to give the Bullpups the lead, but Carthage got a big three-point basket to regain the lead. Carthage worked their way through some turnovers to hold on for the one-point win.
Alex Beesley led St. Anthony with 11 points. Alex Deters scored nine points, Walsh had seven points, Wyatt Lawrence six, and Greg Utz three. Other St. Anthony team members are Will Willenborg, Jacob Brandt, Chris Heuerman, Parker Seachrist, Nick Goeckner, Jacob Zimmerman, Nick Martelli, Jacob Guy and Jack Nuxoll.
Kennedy Gooding scored 30 of Carthage's 37 points.
St. Anthony's ends its season with a 16-8 record.

Meanwhile, Stewardson-Strasburg fell to undefeated Annawan 47-31 at the 8-1A State Tournament at Bartonville Limestone High School.
Annawan was only up 12-10 after the first quarter, but extended the lead to 25-17 by halftime and 32-22 after three periods before outscoring the Comets 15-9 in the final quarter.
Isaac Kramer led Stewardson-Strasburg in scoring with 10 points. Also for Stew-Stras: Jon Koester nine, Chase Thies six, and Trevor Quast, Christian Kessler and Michael Roley two points apiece. Other team members are Ethan White, Dylan Slifer, Tanner Clark and Brady Hansen.
Stewardson-Strasburg finished with a 16-6 record.
