EHS Frosh/Soph Boys Nab Wins

Effingham High School's freshman and sophomore boys basketball teams picked up victories over Mount Vernon Wednesday evening.

In the freshman game, the Hearts edged Mount Vernon 48-47. The Rams held a 14-9 opening quarter lead and led 27-20 at halftime. Mount Vernon was still in the lead going into the final quarter 37-31 but the Hearts came roaring back with a 17-10 run to pull out the one-point victory.

Donaldson tallied 22 and Beals 16 for the Hearts.

In sophomore play, Effingham claimed a 47-40 victory.  The Hearts trailed 13-6 after the opening quarter and 25-19 at halftime. EHS then had a 17-8 third quarter run and continued with the momentum through the fourth quarter.

Jackson scored 21 and Schafer 10 for the winners.

The Effingham freshman team will be back in action tonight at the Hillsboro Tournament. The Hearts will face Pana for the championship at 8 p.m. The third place contest has Auburn against Vandalia at 6:45 and the consolation championship is Hillsboro facing Taylorville at 5:30.
