EJHS, St. A, St. Michael, Dieterich Move Into Eighth-Grade Regional Championships

ST. ELMO -- Effingham St. Anthony and Dieteirch moved into the championship game of the Class 8-2A St. Elmo Boys Basketball Regional with victories Monday evening.

St. Anthony opened the evening with a 56-23 win over Neoga. The Bullpups jumped out to a 17-6 opening quarter lead and never looked back. St. Anthony improved to 14-7.

Deters was the lone player in the contest to finish in double figures with 15. Beesley tallied nine. Neoga was led by Fritcher with six points.

In the second game, Dieterich edged out to a 15-13 halftime lead then had an 8-2 third quarter run and went on for the 41-28 win.

Radloff tallied 18 and Higgs 11 for the winners. Dieteirch is now 17-4 on the season. Brown led Altamont with 12 points and Stevenson added nine.

St. Anthony and Dieterich will meet for the championship Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

At Mattoon

Effingham moved into the championship game of the Class 8-4A Mattoon Regional with a victory Monday evening.

The Mustangs claimed a 47-40 win over Charleston. Hull tallied 16 and Sandifer 11 for the Mustangs. Sandifer had four steals while Hull and Levitt had six rebounds each. Effingham improves to 17-4.

In the second contest, Champaign Edison defeated Mattoon 33-24.

Effingham was to face Champaign Edison tonight but the game has been postponed to Thursday, February 6 at 4:30 p.m.

At Effingham

Sigel St. Michael and Palestine advanced in the Class 8-1A Effingham Sacred Heart Regional.

St. Michael won over Martinsville easily, 28-8. St. Michael held Martinsville to only five points by halftime while taking a 14-5 lead. Then held the opposing squad scoreless in the third quarter.

Kreke tallied 12 for the winners. Branson led Martinsville with four.

In the second game, Palestine downed Newton St. Thomas 38-27. Wesner tallied 14 and Tingley 12 in the win for Palestine.

Newton St. Thomas was led by Rieman and Schafer with seven points each.

Sigel St. Michael and Palestine meet for the championship at 6 p.m. today, weather permitting.
