T-town, St. Michael Win Jr. High Regional, EJHS To Play For Championship Tonight

CHARLESTON -- Effingham Junior High School defeated Champaign Jefferson 32-19 Thursday evening to advance to the championship game of the Class 4-A Charleston Boys Basketball Regional.
Effingham trailed Jefferson 5-2 after the opening quarter but came back with a 13-3 second period run and never looked back.
Grant Wolfe tallied 22 points to lead the Mustangs.
In the second game of the evening, Mattoon edged Champaign Edison 41-40.
Effingham faces Mattoon at 6 p.m. today for the regional title. The winner advances to the Effingham Sectional Wednesday, February 5 to face the winner of the Urbana Regional.

Class 7-3A Tuscola Regional
Teutopolis captured the championship of the 7-3A Tuscola Regional Thursday evening by downing Cumberland 30-24.
The Wooden Shoes stepped out to a 13-3 opening quarter lead but led only 17-13 at halftime. T-town then had a 7-3 third period run.
Dawson Smith scored 22 for the winners while Cumberland was led by Hatfill with 11.
T-town will now face Red Hill (Bridgeport) Wednesday, February 5 at the Marshall Sectional at 6 p.m. Red Hill defeated Marshall 45-35 to win the Marshall Regional.

Class 7-1A Palestine Regional
Sigel St. Michael picked up the championship of the Class 7-1A Palestine Regional with a 36-24 win over Hutsonville Thursday evening.
St. Michael now advances to the Palestine Sectional Wednesday, February 5 at 6 p.m. to face Windsor.
Class 7-1A Windsor Regional
Windsor captured the championship of its own regoinal by downing Cowden-Herrick 25-19 in the title contest Thursday.
Windsor advances to the Palestine Sectional against Sigel St. Michael Wednesday, February 5 at 6 p.m.
At Effingham
In regular season eighth-grade games Thursday evening, Effingham split victories with Carlyle in A and B competition.
The Mustangs won the B game 27-13. Morrissey tallied eight to lead the Mustangs who improve to 2-0.
In the A contest, Carlyle edged Effingham 39-37. Effingham jumped out to an 11-2 opening quarter lead and led 18-13 at halftime. The Mustangs still held a 26-20 lead going into the final quarter when Carlye rallied to pull out the victory.
"The kids played their hearts out," said EJHS Coach Rod Wiethop. "It was a heartbreaking way to end our regular season."
Effingham is now 16-4 on the season.
