Stew-Stras, SE/B, Altamont, Dieterich Win Openers in NTC Eighth-Grade Tourney, Area Roundup

Stewardson-Strasburg, St. Elmo/Brownstown, Altamont and Dieterich picked up opening round victories in the boys National Trail Conference Eighth-Grade Basketball Tournament Saturday at St. Elmo.

Stew-Stras defeated Windsor 51-20. Kessler was the lone player in the contest in double figures for the winners with 18. Stew-Stras improves to 13-4.

In the second game, St. Elmo/Brownstown downed Neoga 53-42. SE/B led 27-22 at halftime then had a 26-20 second half run. Brown led the winners with 15 while Maxey chipped in with 13. Neoga was led by Hill with 11.

Robert Davis led Altamont to a 48-20 win over Cowden-Herrick. Davis connected on seven field goals, including three trifectas, and hit a free throw for 24 points. Cowden-Herrick was led by Barfield with six points.

The final game of the day went to Dieterich over Sigel St. Michael 48-36. The winners had a 21-10 first half lead. Higgs led the way with 18 pionts while Campbell chipped in with 13. St. Michael was led by Wolke and Althoff with 10 points each.

The tournament continues tonight as Stew-Stras faces St. Elmo/Brownstown at 6:15 followed by Altamont taking on Dieterich at 7:30. Tuesday's games feature Windsor against Neoga at 6:15 and Cowden-Herrick against St. Michael at 7:30.

At Casey

Effingham traveled to Casey-Westfield and exploded with 17 first quarter points and used solid defense throughout, limiting Casey-Westfield to only four points per quarter to capture a 38-16 victory.

With the win the Mustangs improve to 14-1 and face St. Anthony Wednesday for a final regular season contest. The Mustangs got 23 points from Landon Wolfe and eight from Zach Lee.

Effingham received the No. 1 sseed in the upcoming Charleston 4A Regional and will play the winner of the Champaign Jefferson and Charleston contest January 17.

At Mattoon

St. Anthony's eighth-grade squad headed to Mattoon Saturday and claimed a 37-27 win over the homestanders.

St. Anthony was led by Jack Nuxoll with 11 points and now sports a 12-4 record.

At Newton

Teutopolis and Jasper County split victories. T-town claimed a 32-7 win in seventh-grade B action. Kendall Zerrusen tallied eight points to lead the winners.

In the eighth-grade B contest, Jasper County won 35-16. Kocher scored eight to lead the winners.

In Saturday action, T-town defeated Mount Vernon twice. T-town won the seventh-grade contest 53-12. Clint Weber scored 13 and Tyler Runde 11.

In eighth-grade play, T-town was a 54-43 winner. Lee Hardiek scored 21 to lead the winners.
