Mattoon High School lost to Teutopolis 68-57 back in December in the Teutopolis/Effingham Christmas Classic. But this time around, the Green Wave came roaring out on the floor to take a 17-5 opening quarter lead and go on for a 72-57 non-conference boys basketball win Tuesday evening at J.H. Griffin Gym.

Mattoon learned a lot from that first meeting when T-town's Reed Hardiek scored a whopping 20 points in the first quarter. Mattoon's defense held Hardiek and the Wooden Shoes to only five first period points and the Wave led 38-18 at halftime.

T-town came back with a 21-20 third period run and outscored Mattoon 18-14 in the final quarter but it was too little, too  late.

Jared Pilson led Mattoon with 26 points while Tanner Scott chipped in with 13 and Travis Kittell 12. The Green Wave improve to 6-6 on the season.

T-town, playing without starter Cody Will who is out with a shoulder injury, was led by Hardiek with 17 points. Brett Mette tallied 14. The Shoes drop to 10-4 on the season.
