Kansas Defeats Toledo

Perry Ellis had 21 points and 11 rebounds as No. 16 Kansas defeated Toledo 93-83 Monday night. Naadir Tharpe registered 20 points and eight assists, while Andrew Wiggins tallied 20 points and five boards for the Jayhawks (9-3), who have won three in a row since a 1-3 stretch. Joel Embiid added 14 points and 10 rebounds in the triumph.

 

Illinois Hosts Indiana In Big Ten Opener Today

(Champaign, IL) -- Illinois raise the curtain on the Big Ten season with a New Year's Eve matinee against Indiana. The Fighting Illini defeated UIC 74-60 Saturday at the United Center for their second straight win. Illinois is now 11-2 on the season. The Hoosiers have been off since beating Kennesaw State December 22. IU is 10-3.

 

EIU's Oliver Named OVC Newcomer Of Week

BRENTWOOD, Tenn.  – Eastern Illinois men’s basketball player Chris Olivier was named the Ohio Valley Conference’s Newcomer of the Week for his on-court performance last week. The junior forward shares the weekly award with Southeast Missouri’s Jarekious Bradley.

In just his third game with EIU after transferring from Northern Iowa and becoming eligible at the semester break, Olivier tipped-in the game-winning basket with 1.8 seconds remaining as the Panthers opened conference play with a 70-69 come-from-behind victory over Tennessee State on Dec. 28.

Olivier scored 14 points on 7-of-15 field goal attempts, pulled down 15 rebounds and blocked three shots in 25 minutes of play off the bench. After EIU trailed by 10 points (63-53) with 3:59 to play, he scored six points and had three rebounds down the stretch to help his team snap a six-game losing streak.

Bradley was also named the player of the week while Belmont’s Evan Bradds was selected as the freshman of the week. The Panthers return to action on Thursday, Jan. 2 as they play host to Eastern Kentucky at 7 p.m.


Syracuse Still Second In Latest Hoops Poll

Syracuse is holding firm at number-two in the latest "USA Today" top-25 college basketball poll. The 12-0 Orange received one first-place vote. Arizona is No. 1 for the fourth straight week at 13-0. The Wildcats received 30-of-32 first-place votes. Ohio State got the other and is ranked third at 13-0.
