Chrisman Beats Dieterich For Cumberland Tourney Title

TOLEDO -- Chrisman High School downed Dieterich 47-39 to clinch the championship of the Cumberland Boys Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament Saturday.

Dieterich held a 14-13 first quarter lead but Chrisman moved ahead to lead 23-22 at halftime and 31-29 going into the final quarter. Chrisman then connected on 11 of 11 free throws in the final quarter to pull out the victory.

Niemerg led the Maroons with 10 points while Traub added nine.

The third place contest went to Newton over Neoga 48-42. Newton took a 14-7 opening quarter lead and led 23-18 at halftime. Neoga came back with an 18-15 third period run to pull within 38-36 but Newton put together a final quarter 10-6 run for the win.

Gunner Pickens tallied 14 points for the winners connecting on only one field goal but hitting 12 of 14 free throws. Lucas Stone also scored in double figures with 12.

Neoga was led by Wyatt Krike with 13 points.

Oblong claimed fifth place over Hutsonville-Palestine 60-25.

Cumberland then bounced Martinsville 63-17 for seventh place.Cumberland led 29-17 at halftime and then held Martinsville scoreless in the second half. The Pirates were led by Napier with 12 and Shoan with 10.
