Michigan State Edges Kentucky In Chicago
(Chicago, IL) -- Branden Dawson's tip-in with 10 seconds left gave the Spartans a four-point lead as second-ranked Michigan State edged top-ranked Kentucky 78-74 in the State Farm Champions Classic at the United Center. Michigan State guard Keith Appling says this was a big win, but they aren't getting ahead of themselves.
Appling racked up 22 points, eight assists, eight rebounds and four steals for the Spartans, who improved to 2-and-0 on the young season. Gary Harris added 20 points and Adreian Payne had 15 in the victory. Julius Randle posted game-highs of 27 points and 13 boards for the Wildcats, who fell to 2-1. James Young netted 19 points and Andrew Harrison had 11 in defeat.
Freshman Andrew Wiggins posted 22 points with eight rebounds as sixth-ranked Kansas pulled away late for a 94-83 win over number-four Duke in the nightcap of the Champions Classic from Chicago. Perry Ellis finished with 24 points and nine boards for the Jayhawks, who moved to 2-and-0. Freshman Wayne Selden Jr. added 15 points and six rebounds for KU. Duke freshman Jabari Parker finished with a game-high 27 points to go with nine rebounds before fouling out late in the second half. Amile Jefferson had 17 points for the Blue Devils, who dipped to 1-and-1.
Illinois Hosts Valpo Tonight
(Champaign, IL) -- Illinois is back in action tonight playing host to Valparaiso at the State Farm Center. The Fighting Illini defeated Alabama State and Jacksonville State over the weekend to start the season 2-0. Valpo is also 2-0 this year. Tip off is set for 6:30 tonight in Champaign.
DePaul Faces Southern Miss Tonight
(Rosemont, IL) -- DePaul gets back on the hardwood tonight playing host to Southern Miss at AllState Arena. The Blue Demons defeated Grambling State on Saturday to open the season. Southern Miss also won its opener. Tonight's game tips at 8:00 in Rosemont.
