FAIRFIELD -- It came down to the final second as Teutopolis held off Fairfield to claim the championship of the Class 2A Fairfield Boys Basketball Regional Friday evening.
With ninth-tenths of a second remaining, Fairfield got the ball after a free throw attempt but couldn't do anything as time ran out and the Wooden Shoes came out a 50-49 winner.
Fairfield took a 13-8 opening quarter lead as Justice Dagg, Kallen Miller and Ethan McElravy put in a three-pointer each.
Brody Thoele hit a three for the Shoes in that quarter. Then the Shoes got on a roll with a 17-7 second period to lead 25-20 at halftime.
Alex Kremer hit a basket and a free throw for three while Mick NIebrugge and Isaac McWhorter each nailed one from beyond the arc.
Then it was the Mules turn to come back with an 18-12 third quarter to move ahead 38-37. Brayton Robertson, who hadn't scored in the first half, put in four baskets for eight points while Dagg connected on a three, two free throws and a regular basket for seven. Jake Easton also knocked in a three.
