Mount Carmel Downs T-town In Paris Sectional Title Game

PARIS -- The Teutopolis High School Wooden Shoes got off to another slow start and this time couldn't recover as they fell to Mount Carmel 42-32 in the Class 2A Paris Sectional girls basketball championship game Thursday evening.

The Aces jumped out to an 8-0 lead before Teutopolis scored its first point with two minutes left to play in the opening quarter. Chloe Probst did throw in a three-pointer at the end of the period to pull T-town within four at 11-7 after scoring a regular baskets and Malea Helmink put in a bucket.

Mount Carmel continued to use its length to frustrate the Shoes' offense, holding T-town scorelesss through the first 5:30 of the second quarter. A couple of buckets from Helmink helped the Shoes close the gap again at the end of the half as Mount Carmel scored 11 more to lead 22-15 going into the locker room. Riley Hershey hit two baskets and a free throw to lead the Aces with five.

T-town tried to up the tempo in the third quarter but was again outscored 11-8 as Mount Carmel built its biggest lead of the game by 12 points during the quarter and finished with a 33-23 lead. Hershey again was the big gun for the Aces with five points on a regular basket and a three. Alivia Peach also knocked down a three-pointer.

The Aces held Teutopolis off at the free throw line in the fourth, going seven of 10 while the Shoes were four of four. Mount Carmel hit one basket and T-town's C. Probst put in a three and Anna Probst a two-pointer.

Hershey led Mount Carmel with 15 points on five field goals, one a three-pointer, and four of seven at the line. Also in double figures with the same 15 point total was Maycee Randall with six field goals and three of four at the line.

Teutopolis had one lone player in double figures. Kelsey Niemerg hit three field goals and was four of four at the line for 10 points. Chloe Probst and Helmink finished with eight each.

Helmink led the Shoes in rebounds with 10. A. Probst, Niemerg and Jersey Gaddis had two steals each. The Shoes ended the season with a 26-10 record.

Mount Carmel (30-4) advances to the Tolono Unity Super-Sectional Monday to face Kankakee McNamara at 6:30 p.m.
